Bhopal-based AISECT University (AU) has bagged the acclaimed World Education Award 2016 at a ceremony that was held recently in Dubai. World Education Summit (WES), organized by Elets Technomedia, is the world’s premier platform on education for everyone who is passionate about education and learning. Over the years, the Summit has become the largest gathering of education leaders.

WES 2016 aimed to recognize, highlight, honour and encourage leading models, projects, processes of excellence and sustainable innovation in school and higher education. The Awards, which were a part of the Summit, saw entrepreneurs in the education space getting recognized, giving the award winners a platform to showcase their innovations and best practices. There were 70 award nominations across 40 categories.

Commenting on this win, AISECT University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Vijay Kant Verma said, “With an emphasis on skills and research based higher education, AISECT University (AU) has been a progressive institution ever since its launch and I am happy that our vision has been commended at such a prestigious platform. Unfortunately, not much emphasis is given to hands-on experience and skills in the formal higher education space in India. At AU, we strongly feel that a university must act to reduce overall skills deficit. We have addressed this requirement at two levels. Firstly we have revived practical part of the curriculum through collaboration with local industries. Secondly we have started Skill Academies in each department in collaboration with NSDC. We believe that progression is not just heading forward in the right direction but taking all with you.”

Recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, AISECT University offers Graduate and Post Graduate programs through its Schools of Engineering, Education, Management, Law, Information Technology, M.Phil, Ph.D, Arts, Science and Commerce. It is the first university in India to introduce compulsory skill courses at UG & PG levels. The University has made one skill compulsory every year by each student during any degree course. This way a UG student comes out with minimum 3 to 4 skills in addition to hands-on experience on industrial machines in labs. It has now associated with NSDC and has opened eight Multi Skill Academies providing over 30 skill courses to build hands-on experience and develop respect for labour in students and also develop confidence and reduce employability gap. The University’s curriculum includes a compulsory project competition annually to motivate students to connect to social problems for technical solution through research and innovation.

Research is a major focus area for AISECT University and its current research focus areas include Renewable Energy, Material Science & Environment Science. It has collaboration with several institutes/research centres and universities in India and abroad. The University has several projects including one in collaboration with Taiwan and IIT New Delhi for developing efficient material for solar cell to increase efficiency by 100%.With Ukraine there is a project on earthquake prediction. Every year AISECT University organizes competition at UG level through research projects and project. Research activity is compulsory from first year onwards for UG students.

The curriculum of AU encourages students to think in terms of starting their own enterprise. For this, the University organises entrepreneur development programmes. AISECT University participates in a large number of cultural, social and sports activities/competitions/events at regional to international level. At least one international event is organised every year in the University. In March 2016 AU will be holding an International Conference on Climate, Water Environment and Energy in which more than 20 countries are participating with publication of 300 research papers.

AU has collaboration with A&M Texas University, RPI USA, ICEWaRM Australia, KAIST Korea, NCTU Taiwan and KYIV University Ukraine for exchange. Within India it has MoU’s and collaboration with more than 15 institutes like IIT’s, CSIR, NIT’s etc. In industries it has collaboration with companies like Microsoft, Tata Motors, Reliance, BSNL, IT Power etc who have set up joint skill centers research labs etc. thereby making a vibrant platform for development.

Over the year, the University’s progressive approach has earned accolades at numerous national and international platforms including the Shiksha Ratna Award, the ASSOCHAM National Education Excellence Award and the World Education Summit Award.
