Today E-learning has become a way of life. Students from all over the world prefer looking up to the internet as a mode of studying. They want to constantly learn newer subjects and widen their horizon. Considering this shift in interest and way of studying, various universities and colleges have introduced many online courses for students, where they can choose from plethora of options. The institutes have introduced such online courses under the Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM), which is a portal of Massive Online and Open Courses (MOOCs). These courses will help students learn about other subjects and help build a better resume. Meant for all the senior secondary, bachelor’s level and postgraduate level students, MOOCs have been launched under the Ministry of Human Resource Department (HRD) and University Grants Commission (UGC).
SWAYAM aims to offer around 2,000 courses under a network of 80,000 hours of learning supporting at least three crore learners; currently, there are 200 plus courses available. SWAYAM will help aspirants learn and grasp these courses through audio-video methods, illustrations, text, case studies, e-books, self-assessment and research papers. It will cover subjects including arts, science, performing arts, history, social sciences, humanities, engineering, technology, commerce, law, agriculture and medicine.
The Centre for e-Learning (CfeL) at SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi University has developed 42 of the first set of 200 MOOCs. The courses in these MOOCs prepared by SWAYAM are interactive and can be accessed on computers/laptops and even smartphones. To develop this system, SWAYAM has used various technical tools to keep it very user friendly and easy to understand. This is a step towards enhancing the quality of education by using technology.
