CAT 2016 is a computer-based exam that any of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) conducts every year on the rotation basis. Last year, IIM Ahmedabad conducted the exam, whereas IIM Bangalore is to conduct the CAT for the academic session of 2016-17. This computer based exam is conducted on a single date for admission into various business management programmes across IIMs located all over India. CAT 2016 is to score a candidate on the basis of Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability and Reading Comprehension. 

After 2011, Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Science (IISc) have also replaced Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) with CAT scores to give admission to various management programmes. Until April 2009, CAT was a pen and paper based exam. However, after a notification on May 1, 2009, CAT officially became a computer-based exam.

CAT 2016 Official Notification is Out

As per the official notification off IIM Bangalore, CAT 2016 exam will be held on December 4, 2016. The registrations for filling up seats in the management programmes in all the IIMs across various states of India will commence from August 8, 2016 and will cease on 5PM on the 27th day of September 2016. As we all know IIM Bangalore is to conduct the CAT exam this year. Prof Rajendra K Bandi will be the convener of the exam and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will continue to be the test taking agency for the year 2016. The registration process for the is expected to begin in the first week of August 2016.

CAT 2016: How to Apply

Candidates who want to apply for the CAT 2016 need to follow the simple steps mentioned hereunder to do so without investing too much of time for the same.

  • Visit the official website  
  • Create a user account by filling in the name, date of birth, mobile number and a valid e-mail address in the space provided.
  • Check the ‘I Agree’ box and finally click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • This will lead candidates to the CAT 2016 application page.
  • Candidates need to fill in the required details in the prescribed format and submit the application form with details like three exam centre city preferences, passport size photo and others details required. Candidates can pay the application fee (INR 1700 general and INR 850 for reserved categories) online.

Candidates are advised to take the printout of the receipt for the future reference.  Also, candidates need to remember that they can submit the CAT application form by 5PM on September 27, 2016.

CAT 2016 Application Fee 

The registered fee for this computer based CAT 2016 exam is INR 1700 for the general category and NC-OBC candidates, INR 850 for SC/ST/Person with Disability. Candidates will be able to pay their application fee through the official portal of the association using Debit or Credit Card and through Net Banking.

CAT 2016 Application Correction Process 

First time ever in the history of CAT, the exam conducting body, which is IIM Bangalore this year, is allowing candidates to correct mistakes they have made while filling up the appplication forms. With this, candidates will able to avoid the application rejection. Candidates can make correction in application forms until October 5, 2016. Only those who have completed the application process and paid the fee can correct erros in the application form. Candiates can change the following fields in the application forms:

  • Percentage of Marks Obtained.
  • Programme Selected
  • Work Experience  

CAT 2016 Eligibility Criteria

A candidate who wants to study business management in IIM/IIT/IISc and aims to pursue a rewarding career in this field should be a graduate degree or equivalent from the recognised institute/college/university. The minimum pass percentage for appearing in the CAT 2016 exam is 50 percent for the general category and 45 percent for SC/ST/PwD category candidates. Aspirants who are appearing for the final year/final semester exam of degree course are also eligible to apply. However, they have to pass graduation in the same year and fulfil the qualifying criteria

Changes in CAT Exam from 2015 Onward

CAT exam pattern went considerable changes in the year 2015. IIM Ahmedabad that convened the CAT last year overhauled the exam structure to provide the level playing field between engineering and non-engineering candidates. The sole objective for the same was to have more non-engineers, women and candidates from all walks of life in IIM. The overhauling in the  syllabus will also be applicable for CAT 2016 exam and is also aimed at improving the academic and gender diversity in IIM classrooms.

CAT 2016 Seat Reservation

As per the government of India directions, 15 percent seats are reserved for the SC, 27 percent for OBC under non-creamy layer, 7.5 percent for ST and 3 percent for the physically challenged candidates. To claim the seat under any of the reserved categories, candidates applying for CAT 2016 need to apply for the same during the registration and produce relevant reserved category documents issued by the competent authority in their name as and when directed. However, the reserved seat percentage is subject to change as per the year by the Indian government. 

CAT 2016 Syllabus 

The syllabus of CAT 2016 exam is expected to have quantitative aptitude section that will consist of fundamental maths with the 12th standard difficulty level. Questions are generally asked from various areas of the subject such as Algebra, Geometry, Commercial Maths (Word problems) and Arithmetic. The test will also include data interpretation and logical reasoning section that include questions put in the form of data like paragraphs, tables, charts, graphs etc. CAT syllabus this year will also include verbal ability section to test the candidate’s ability to comprehend and understanding of basic English grammar. 

CAT 2016 Exam Pattern 

Candidates need to prepare hard by the time CAT 2016 exam is conducted in the month of December. CAT exam for the year 2016 will have a total of 100 questions of three marks each from Logical Reasoning, Verbal Ability and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation. This computer based online exam will be three hours long and one mark will be cut for every wrong answer a candidate gives.

CAT 2016 Admit Cards 

The admit card for CAT 2016  exam will be available for download after 1 PM on October 24, 2016. Candidates need to reach out to the official website to download the same. Candidates will be able to download their admit cards until December 4, 2014.Remember that no admit card will be sent to candidates via post. Candidates need to access and download their admit cards from the official website.

CAT 2016 Exam Date

CAT 2016 exam will be conducted on December 4, 2016. According to the convener of the exam, Professor Rajendra K Bandi, the exam will be conducted in two sessions on one single day across 138 cities in India. Candidates will be able to select four cities in order of preference and the test cities and centres will be assigned to the applicants once the registration process is over.
