It is being speculated that IIM Calcutta will be renamed as IIM Kolkata and IIM Shillong will have the name of the former PM Rajiv Gandhi dropped from its name.
IIM Shillong was named the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, in 2008, when it was set up.
As per a report published in Livemint, the bill introduced in Lok Sabha on Thursday has a part mentioning that IIM Calcutta will be renamed as Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata.
The Centre on Friday has also given its nod to the appointment of Directors to 10 IIMs in Bodhgaya, Sirmaur, Visakhapatnam, Tiruchirappalli, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Raipur, Rohtak, Ranchi and Bengaluru.
According to the order given by the Department of Personnel & Training, the new director appointed to IIM Bodhgaya is Ganesan Kannabiran, Neelu Rohmetra of IIM Sirmaur, Chandrasekhar Mylavarapu of IIM Visakhapatnam, Bhimraya Metri of IIM Tiruchirappalli, LS Murty of IIM Nagpur, Mahadeo Prasad Jaiswal of IIM Sambalpur, Bharat Bhasker of IIM Raipur, Dheeraj Sharma of IIM Rohtak, Shailendra Singh of IIM Ranchi and G. Raghuram of IIM Bangalore.
The order also stated that the appointments of IIM Bodhgaya, Sirmaur, Visakhapatnam, Tiruchirappalli, Nagpur and Sambalpur, will be dependent on the result of the writ petition pending before the Delhi High Court.
The petition was filed by Pritam Singh who opposed the government’s 12th January advertisement regarding the appointment of IIM directors on “discrimination” grounds.
Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development had informed the Lok Sabha on 6th February regarding the posts of the director in 14 IIMs of the country lying vacant.
