What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a specialized branch of engineering that focuses on providing in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of Planning, Design, Construction, Supervision, Maintenance and Management of buildings, bridges, roads, dams, canals and other such built environments. Accordingly, civil engineers carry out a number of activities, such as feasibility studies, site investigation, designing of structures and conceiving innovative solutions to realize new constructions.

At Undergraduate Level

After 10+2, civil engineering aspirants have several avenues to explore, such as B. Tech in Civil Engineering, BE (Civil Engineering) and Diploma in Civil Engineering.

Civil Engineering Eligibility Criteria

Those aspiring to pursue a diploma course need to be matriculate with 45 percent marks in Science, Mathematics and English. Aspirants who have cleared their 10+2 (Vocational) or ITI exam can seek admission in the second year of the diploma course.

The aspirants of BE and B Tech (Civil Engineering) courses should have a minimum of 45 percent marks in their higher secondary or 10+2 exam with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as their core subjects. The minimum pass percentage goes down to 40 percent for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates.

Civil Engineering Admission Process

Civil Engineering aspirants who have a diploma course in their mind are supposed to clear Polytechnic Entrance Test with decent scores.
On the other hand, BE Civil Engineering and B Tech (Civil Engineering) aspirants do need to follow the below-mentioned admission process.

Examination

Common Entrance Tests – BE and B Tech (Civil Engineering) aspirants find the national level JEE (Main), JEE (Advanced), VITEEE and SRMJEE tests as their first challenges.

JEE MainSeveral IIITs, NITs and CFTIs, some of which include TU Patiala, MNNIT, NIT Rourkela, NSIT, NIT-W, NITK, BIT Mesra and NIT Trichy, accept JEE Main scores for admission to BE and B Tech (Civil Engineering).

JEE Advanced – Those who find their mention among top 1.5 lakh rank holders in JEE Main can apply for JEE Advanced. Once they clear this exam, the top listed civil engineering aspirants can get admission in Indian School of Mines (ISM) and IITs.

VITEEE Aspirants who want to pursue Civil Engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology are supposed to clear the VITEEE.

SRMJEEE Conducted by SRM University, SRMJEEE serves as a gateway for civil engineering aspirants who can have their respective seats at its campuses in NCR Ghaziabad, Kattankulathur, Ramapuram Vadapalani and Ramapuram after clearing this exam.

Syllabus and Job Prospects

An undergraduate Civil Engineering course from any reputed engineering college or university invariably includes Soil Mechanics, Calculus and Solid Geometry, Concrete Structures, Foundation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Design, Sanitary Engineering, Computer Aided Design of Structures and Transportation Engineering as core subjects.

Job Prospects – After successfully completing their undergraduate civil engineering course, civil engineers can occupy positions such as Geotechnical Engineers, Environmental Engineers, Irrigation Engineers, Transportation Engineers, Construction Engineers and Public Works Engineers.

At Postgraduate Level

After completing their graduation in B Tech (Civil Engineering) or BE, those who wish to pursue higher education have no dearth of options available for them.

Eligibility Criteria

For pursuing M Tech or ME in Civil Engineering, aspirants need to qualify BE / B Tech (Civil Engineering) or equivalent examination from an AICTE affiliated college/university.

Admission Process

The admission process for M Tech or ME in Civil Engineering calls for getting decent scores in entrance examinations, such as GATE.

GATEConducted jointly by the Government of MHRD India and the Department of Higher Education for admissions to postgraduate Civil Engineering and other engineering courses in the IISc and seven IITs, the Graduate Aptitude Test or Civil Engineering (CE) - GATE includes several question on Engineering Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geomatics Engineering and Transportation Engineering.
