The North and South Campus colleges of the Delhi University are slowly losing their sheen in different areas like courses, high-tech campuses, well set up infrastructure etc. to the rising off-campus colleges of DU. These off-campus colleges are attracting a huge number of students every year for admissions.
Even after having high cut-offs, the off-campus colleges closed the admissions to their most popular programmes much before the on-campus colleges. One of the officials explained that the students have changed the way in which they approach college admissions. They are giving preference to courses offered by colleges over the college itself.
The flagship course or specialised courses offered by the off-campus colleges are key features, which give them an edge over the on-campus colleges. Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences is the only college that offers a specialised course on instruments. At the undergraduate level, Institute of Home Economics and Lady Irwin College are the only colleges offering Home Science.
Principals of the colleges believe though that the academic standards of the off-campus colleges have reached to the level of the on-campus colleges over the years.
SK Garg, Principal of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College (DDUC) feels that the off-campus colleges have produced much better results in academics compared to the on-campus colleges. Earlier, location and college were a matter of concern but since off-campus colleges have reached the level of the on-campus colleges, a large number of students are securing seats in these colleges.
