New IITs

The Government of India is to establish 6 new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country. Notably, the Union Cabinet has cleared 7000 crores fund against the establishment of 6 new IIT campuses in 6 different states of India. The talks of setting up few new IIT campuses in the country were going on for over a year now and the Union Cabinet had cleared the proposal in the month of September 2017. However, the decision regarding the establishment was finally made last week on Tuesday.

The Union Cabinet, under the direction of the Prime Minister Narendar Modi, had been conducted to grant permission to initiate the operational activities primarily by forming the Societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. These Societies will give the new IITs the legal status until the modifications for their incorporation in The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 is sanctioned.

As per the official statement quoted by PTI, these new IITs will have an intake of 180 students in its first year, which would further escalate to 450 in the second year and 928 (including 840 Undergraduates, 80 Postgraduates and 8 PhDs) in the third year.

Here is the list of those six locations where we are going to get new IIT campuses. So, if you do not have an IIT in your state, let’s find out if your state is listed among these locations!
