IIT M. Tech Admission

IIT M. Tech Admission: Getting into the IIT for M.Tech is something every engineering graduate dreams about. And, to fulfil this dream, one must appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). The GATE exam is the passport for IIT M.Tech Admission. If you are willing to appear for GATE 2018 or have already sit for GATE exam to take up a postgraduate course in engineering at any of the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), let us give you every detail you may require to go ahead with the M.Tech admission process in IITs. Notably, along with the GATE scores, IITs also consider some non-GATE candidates, for which you will need to satisfy the specific admission criteria.

Applying for M. Tech Admission at IITs

There is no common M.Tech application or admission process for all IITs. Every IIT has its own online application process, which candidates need to follow while for IIT M.Tech Admission. Candidates with valid GATE scores are eligible to apply for admissions to M.Tech in a single or multiple IITs of the country. As GATE scores remain valid for a period of three years, a candidate can apply for M. Tech at an IIT if his/her GATE score is in the validity period. However, it is also important to meet other specific eligibility criteria that each IIT may have.

Here, we are listing out all the IITs, their locations, acronyms and establishment. You can click on each IIT’s name to get detailed information about the institute, its courses, IIT M.Tech admission process and other relevant information.

Basic Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech

Just like any other engineering colleges, IIT M.Tech admission also varies from institute to institute. However, there are some criteria that remain common for applying to all the IITs. Check out the following criteria here:

The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science (4-year course) or an equivalent degree course from a recognised institute or university.

Along with the graduate degree, the candidate must have a valid GATE score.  However, engineering graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and 8.0 in the last two years of B.Tech degree (from any IIT) respectively can apply for IIT M.Tech admission even without GATE score.

Candidates must qualify the written test and interview for specific IITs, which are conducted to evaluate the aptitude and knowledge of the engineering graduates from IITs and non-IIT students in some cases.

(Note: The eligibility criteria across all the IITs are different. Hence, students are advised to check the qualification and test requirements for each IIT  separately or the institute which you wish to apply for IIT M.Tech admission.)

Meeting GATE Cut-offs

Candidates seeking IIT M.Tech admission must satisfy the other criterion, which is GATE cut-off. GATE cut-offs are set by each institute as per the M.Tech specialisations they offer and thus these cut-offs vary from institute to institute. For instance, the cut-off for nanotechnology wouldn’t be same as the cut off for biotechnology programme. Hence, the candidate should clear the GATE cut-offs for applying t the desired course in the preferred IIT is as important as satisfying other criteria.

Generally, IITs, the conducting body of the GATE exam, announce cut-offs every year candidates belonging to all the categories. Hence, the exam authority releases category wise cut-offs, which includes cut-offs for General, SC, ST, OBC, PH, etc. Every year, IITs set-up these cut-offs seeing several factors such as the number of students appeared for GATE exam, number of seats available in all the IITs and marks/rank obtained by the GATE takers. Candidates should prepare well and score good marks in GATE to get IIT M.Tech admission easily.
