The HRD ministry has considerably raised the fees for courses offered at NITs and IISER.
Now, you may have to shell out more than a lakh if you wish to study at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) or the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER).
After IITs, there has been a considerable increase in the fees of NITs and IISER.
The HRD ministry has hiked the fees for NITs and IISER from 70,000 to 1.25 lakh per annum and 15,000 to 25,000 per semester respectively.
Meanwhile, students who wish to get admission in undergraduate or post-graduate courses offered by NITs and IISER but are Differently-Abled or belong to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) community will get a total fee waiver.
Also, students belonging to families with annual income less than Rs 1 lakh will also be entitled to fee waiver, whereas students belonging to families with annual income less than Rs 5 lakh will only get a fee waiver of two-thirds the fee amount.
This amendment will be applicable for new admissions i.e. for those who will take admission this year and not for those who are already studying.
Students can also apply for interest-free loan under the ‘Vidya Lakshmi Scheme’.
In total, there are 31 NITs in India and 7 IISER institutes.
Before this, HRD ministry hiked IITs annual fees from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh, insisting that the fee hike will provide more resources to these institutions so that the highest quality of education can be provided to students.
