JEE Main 2017 Rank List

The race for admission in one of the best engineering institutions has already begun for students in India. And, the marks scored in the JEE Main 2017 entrance test will decide the future of those aiming to become engineers. The JEE Main Rank List for 2017 will be rolled out soon after declaration of the JEE Main 2017 result by the CBSE. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) calculates a candidate’s rank based on total marks scored in the JEE Main exam, which further decides his/her eligibility for admission in institutions like NITs, IITs and GFTIs for various undergraduate engineering courses they offer.

The JEE Main Rank List is compiled after careful examination of marks scored by candidates in the offline / online written entrance test. The list consists of All India Rank, State Rank, and category rank obtained by the applicants.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) further takes care of counselling, and institution and seat allocation once the candidate’s name is shortlisted in the Rank List.

The chances of getting into an IIT or NIT entirely depend on his/her rank in the JEE Main Rank List. However, latest notifications from the Ministry of Human Resource Development say:

  • No weightage will be given for the 12th class marks while calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main) exam.
  • 75% marks, or the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards are a prerequisite for qualifying for the admission in the IITs/NITs/IIITs and other CFTIs whose admissions are based on the JEE (Advanced) /JEE (Main) ranks. However, the minimum qualifying marks for SC / ST students are 65% in the 12th class examination.

Significance of JEE Main Rank List:

  • The JEE Main Rank list confirms an aspirant’s place in all India ranks, state ranks, category-wise ranks and subject-wise scores in the entrance examination
  • Another rank list is compiled on the basis of the JEE Main list for admissions in undergraduate programs like B.E./B. Tech. and B. Arch / B. Planning in institutions other than IITs

Tie-break Mechanism in JEE Main Rank List:

If there is a tie in the JEE Main Rank List between two or more students applying for B.E./B. Tech (in institutions other than IITs), the ranks of the respective students are determined by tie-breaking rules, which imply:

  • According to tire-breaking mechanism, the students scoring higher marks in Mathematics and Physics will be offered higher ranks.
  • Calculating the ratio of positive marks and negative marks is another tie-breaking procedure, in which the candidate having higher absolute value of the ratio is offered higher rank.
  • Candidates are offered the same rank if the issue remains unresolved even after application of all the criterions listed above.

Slightly different tie-breaking mechanism applies in case of a tie between two or more students in the JEE Main Rank List, applying for B.Arch / B. Planning (in Institutions other than IITs), which is:

  • Students scoring higher marks in Aptitude Test will be offered higher rank.
  • Students scoring higher marks in Drawing Test will be offered higher rank.
  • Calculating the ratio of positive marks and negative marks is another tie-breaking procedure, in which the candidate having higher absolute value of the ratio is offered higher rank.
  • Candidates will be given the same rank if the resolution is not possible after applying the criterion mentioned above.
