The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) stated that admission to first-year engineering and pharmacy courses will only be based on the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MH-CET) from 2018. Instead of JEE Main, candidates have to now prepare for the MHTCET 2018 to get admission in desired engineering and pharmacy college of Maharashtra.

Undoubtedly, this statement may arise several uncertainties and confusion over the conduct of JEE Main Examination for engineering admissions from the coming year.

Dayanand Meshram, Joint director of DTE, said, "The common entrance test would be on a par with JEE in 2018-19." The syllabus for next year's CET will be from class XII as well as XI.

He further added that “The exact weightage of both the class syllabi would be decided by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.”

This year, MHT CET will be tougher in order to match the standard of JEE Main.

Earlier, in this year, a notification has been issued by the DTE which clarified that the Class 11th and 12th syllabus of mathematics, physics, and chemistry in MHT-CET would be equivalent to JEE Main while the syllabus of biology would be at par with NEET. Also, the negative marking will not be there in MHT CET. All these steps were taken to improve the quality of entrance examination.

Every year, Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell conducts Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) in the month of May. The entrance test will be conducted in 2018 for admission to Degree Courses of Technical Education (Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy and Pharm. D.). Eligible students can apply for this exam in February 2017.

Complete details of MHT CET 2018 Important dates will be issued in February along with the official notification. However, details of JEE Main 2018 will be available in the month of November 2017. The statement will be clarified with the availability of information brochure of JEE Main.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is expecting that from 2018, only one national level entrance test will be conducted. However, no official notification has been issued for clarifying the details.
