MHRD gives IIMs authority to decide whether they want to award PGDM or an MBA degree to their students.
It’s been a while we have been listening about a debate going on between the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) on whether these premier B-schools should award Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) or an MBA degree to the students. The news has been doing the rounds of the web for a considerable time now, but there has had not been any consensus on the issues until now. Some of the IIMs have continued awarding with PGDM this year while some have chosen to award MBA degree.
The latest development has come in this regard. As per an official of the HRD ministry, IIMs have been given the freedom to decide whether they want to continue awarding PGDM or start with an MBA degree now. However, the fact remains that even when the IIMs have been given authority to decide on the PGDM and MBA, the premier institutes of management in the country have not arrived at a consensus on the matter either, which, again, points to the sorry state of affairs.
Until last year, IIMs used to give PGDM for those who have completed their masters’ degree in management. However, a common man fails to understand why MHRD wants to replace PDGM with MBA degree. PGDM has become more of a status symbol for the passing out students and that makes them stand apart from the rest of the crowd – something, at least, I believe they deserve.
Particular, MBA is more of a common degree and PDGM is something that gives students from IIMs a different stature among ordinary MBA colleges. That’s the only reason why students of 2016 and 2017 batch at some of the IIMs are more interested in and demanding for PGDM instead of MBA.
