Coursera launches MOOCs

The online course provider Coursera has recently launched a Massive Online and Open Course (MOOC) ‘English for Journalism’, under partnership with the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of Language Programmes and University of Pennsylvania.  This is a five-week course, which is accessible to anyone with internet facilities across the globe. It is a course structure for people who want to explore print and digital media.

This programme will help in understanding various aspects of journalism including research, ability to read, extract and develop local and global news stories. This interactive course will not only have various interesting reads, but video lectures that will help expand vocabulary and understand the very basics of journalism. Every week, the course structure will move from basic principles of journalism to analysis of growth, impact and numerous challenges of digital media, followed by assignments that will allow the learners to discuss different facets of digital media and changes in journalism.

Journalism has evolved over the years. Various media houses today have changed the way they choose to report and write news. There is a constant change in their formats and content, which leads to a very restricted knowledge of students studying journalism. To help upgrade, this course provides a solid base for all the learners who are ready to gain the right skill sets needed for a great career in modern journalism.

Course Structure

English for Journalism is a five-week course, which will be divided in to five units covering all the important topics related to journalism and digital media. Following are the five units with different categories that include-

Focus on the language needed to write in a magazine or a newspaper article

Unit 4

Basics of broadcasting the news

Unit 5

Journalism in the digital age
