NITs Cutoff for B. Tech Civil Engineering

NITs or National Institutes of Technology are the premier engineering and technology institutions in India. The Government of India has conferred the INI (Institutes of National Importance) status on NITs. There are 31 NITs in the country, and all these institutes participate in the process of student admissions through JEE Main or Joint Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE every year in India. Based on NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering, computer science engineering, electronics and communication engineering, and other branches, many engineering aspirants are admitted into different NIT courses.

NIT Cutoff for Civil Engineering

At the time of JEE Main counselling, every institute sets its own cutoff marks for offering admissions in its various courses. Thus, if you seek admission in a civil engineering course at NIT, then you will need to cross the NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering. However, you must note that this cutoff will keep varying after every round of counselling. Due to this, it becomes critical to know about the opening and closing ranks at NITs for this specific branch of engineering. If your rank falls within the range of opening rank to closing rank, then you may have a chance of getting admission in your desired course and college.

Colleges will declare their cutoffs only after JEE Main 2017 results are out. You still do not need to be anxious about meeting the likely NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering. We are providing you with the cutoffs for the year 2016 so you may recheck your goals and make an estimate of the expected cutoffs for the current year. Following is a listing of the opening and closing ranks for civil engineering branch in various NITs. We are providing the ranks for both Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) for the General category. The figures may slightly vary for other categories like OBC, SC, ST, etc.

How to Pursue Civil Engineering from NITs

Most of the NITs offer the four-year B. Tech course in civil engineering. This professional engineering branch deals with the design as well as the construction and maintenance of a wide variety of physical structure and naturally built environment. With a large scope in this domain, many engineering aspirants are attracted towards this discipline. While they want to pursue B. Tech courses from top institutions like IITs and NITs, they are unsure of how to proceed and gain success. Let us tell you about the stepwise process of meeting the NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering and getting admission in one of these premier colleges.

Step 1: To pursue one of the most sought-after courses, you need to start by applying for the JEE Main exam. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is held every year by CBSE to select the right talent for admission in various engineering and technology institutions in India. NITs are among these participating institutions. JEE Main usually takes place in the month of April. The JEE Main 2017 exam is scheduled to be held on April 2 (offline mode) and April 8 and 9 (online mode).

Step 2: JEE Main includes paper 1 and paper 2. While paper 1 is for engineering aspirants, paper 2 is for architecture aspirants. You may appear for paper 1 or for both the papers. Paper 1 will include multiple-choice questions in PCM subjects. The exam results will be declared on April 27, 2017 (for paper 1).

Step 3: When CBSE declares the JEE Main results, it also provides a cutoff or a minimum number of marks that students need to qualify in order to apply for admissions in participating colleges. You will receive your scores and All India ranks for JEE Main. If you qualify the exam, you may proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Based on exam results, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will begin its counselling and seat allotment process in the first week of July 2017. Even if you meet the cutoff for JEE Main, you will need to meet the college cutoff or NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering when you are interested in the particular branch of civil engineering.

Step 5: You should register for the counselling process and lock your choices of institutions and courses. For civil engineering aspirants who are confident of meeting the NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering, it can be helpful to provide the best of NITs as their choices. JoSAA will assess your preferred options against several factors and assign the most suitable seat accordingly. However, you may not be 100% sure of receiving a seat according to your preference. However, if you get into a NIT, you should not wait to freeze your seat and pay the fees to accept it.

Reservation in NITs

Like all other participating colleges of JEE Main, NITs also follow the seat reservation system in accordance with the government norms. Thus, there is specific NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering courses to be offered to students from varied categories. In the above listing, we have provided the opening and closing ranks for the General category. These ranks may vary for other categories, but not very significantly.

Further, we have mentioned the NITs cutoff for B. Tech civil engineering for only those NITs that offer this branch. Another point to notice is the difference in cutoffs between the home state and other states. You should know that NITs have these two main categories to which quotas or reservations are applicable. Home state is the state from where a candidate has passed his/her 12th class. Thus, candidates have a choice of applying through All India Rank or availing Home State quota in the NIT based in their home state.
