Eligibility for B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering at NITs

The eligibility criteria for electrical and electronics engineering at the bachelor’s level is the same as the requirements for other engineering branches.

• Students must have taken certain subjects during class 12 if they hope to meet NITs Cutoff for B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering. English, mathematics, and physics are compulsory while biology, chemistry, biotechnology or other vocational subjects are optional.

• Students aiming to meet the NITs Cutoff for B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering will first have to complete their class 12 examinations or will have to be appearing for their class 12 examinations in the year 2017. New rules applicable for 2017 state that class 12 marks will not be given weightage in the calculation of AIR ranks of the JEE Main. Students will now need to score minimum 75% marks in class 12 final examination or must be in the top 20 ranks in their board. The marks are reduced to 65% for candidates in SC/ST categories.

Note: Another rule that is applicable for 2018 requires Indian students to fill out their Aadhaar Card numbers on the application form. Those who do not have Aadhaar Cards will have to apply for one before applying for the JEE Main 2018. Errors in details on the Aadhaar Cards will also need to be amended to avoid rejection of the application.

B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering Specialisations

Making the NITs Cutoff for B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering and getting admission to NITs will give students the opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degree and work towards obtaining a master’s degree if they choose so. This is possible after passing the required GATE examination and scoring as high a percentile as possible. At the master’s level, students can specialise in areas, such as VLSI/ Micro Electronics, Digital Electronics, Power Systems, Instrumentation and Controls, Aerospace Engineering, etc. They can go on to pursue a doctorate in the stream where they will carry out research activities in their chosen field of study.

B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering Course Summary

Students who have made the NITs Cutoff for B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering will be introduced to course material that will provide them with sound knowledge in electrical and electronics engineering. Some of the subjects covered may include environmental science, engineering mathematics, basic electrical and electronics engineering, engineering chemistry, and engineering physics during the first year of study. The second year will introduce students to concepts such as electromagnetic field theory, discrete mathematics, transmission and distribution system and stochastic processes. In the third year, students will deal with subjects like power electronics, embedded systems, electrical system design and soft computing among others. The fourth and final year will include subjects, such as power plant engineering, and introduce students to industrial training and project works.

Scope of B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering

There is broad scope for electrical and electronics engineering in today’s world. Both electrical and electronics are core branches of engineering and this combination of the two means that there are more job sectors to find employment in. However, graduating from noted NITs is important as companies tend to hire graduates from top institutions. As with most engineering branches, competition is very high and it is imperative that students aim to score in the top percentile.

Job Opportunities after B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Electrical and electronics engineers can find employment in a wide range of sectors like IT and telecommunications, aerospace, energy, and automotive among others. They can find work as IT consultants, network engineers, systems analysts, electrical engineers, aerospace engineers, and nuclear engineers. They can also join PSU/ government sectors and undertake prestigious exams like the UPSC. B. Tech students who aim to pursue electrical and electronics engineering at higher levels of education will be exposed to even more employment opportunities, as there is always a requirement for specialists in certain fields.

Students who meet the NITs Cutoff for B. Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering and go on to completing their bachelor’s degree will be educated in the fundamental knowledge required to support the core electrical and electronics engineering stream. They will develop the skills needed to analyse and resolve electrical engineering problems, and impart the same to energy conservation issues and sustainable development.
