The HRD Ministry is planning to implement PM Research Fellowship Scheme from the next academic year to encourageIITians to take up research.
In a bid to encourage young and talented scholars to take up research in their respective fields, the government is planning to implement Prime Minister's Research Fellowship scheme for IIT pass outs.
According to some officials, the reason for taking this step is to ensure there is enough innovation and productivity to raise the overall standards of the country. To achieve that,it is important that the quality of research is as good as the quality of research scholars working on the project. The matter will be discussed in a meeting of IIT Council where the ultimate course of action will be discussed.
This fellowship will be applicable for all the final year students who have registered themselves for the PhD programme. The students will be required to submit an outlining of the proposal for their research project.
About Prime Minister's Research Fellowship:
The PM's Research Fellowship is a scheme that is designed to encourage young talent and enthusiasts to take up industry-relevant research. Under this fellowship, the full-time PhD scholars get double money that they would get normally. The maximum amount any research scholar gets under any government fellowship at any educational institute is INR 36,400 per month (including HRA), but under the PM's research fellowship, the scholar will get double the amount as scholarship. One-half of this scholarship will come from the government and the other half will come from the partner company which will work closely with the scholar on the research project.
