President Pranab Mukherjee speaks about “Energizing Higher Educational Institutions in India”
Honorable President Shri Pranab Mukherjee interacted with the students and faculty of universities and other institutes of higher learning through the National Knowledge Network (NKN) on 10th August 2015.
The theme for this year’s conference was “Energizing Higher Educational Institutions in India”. He focussed on the challenges that are faced by our higher education systems. He said that according to Dr. Kalam, the 21st century education system must cover five components- research and enquiry, creativity and innovation, capacity to use high end technology, entrepreneurship and moral leadership. He advocated that an inquisitive mind and research oriented approach needs to be built in our students.
With abundance of knowledge and information around, a student must learn how to manage knowledge collectively and how to use technologies for aiding the learning process. He said that universities must create an atmosphere where inspired teachers can effectively propagate knowledge. Taking risks should equally be given importance to achieve the best results by a student.
He also quoted, “Development of the country and betterment of humanity should be the guiding principles for mission driven leaders of tomorrow. "Yes, We Can”, spirit also has to be inculcated in formative years of our gen-next. They must have the disposition ‘to do the right thing’ as well as ‘to do things right’.”
Other key points discussed were:
- Urgent measures to improve academic management in higher level institutions
- Disruptive technologies should be used to our advantage
- Concrete action to present the credentials of our institutions is needed
- Must build a research culture and promote research activity at all levels
- Our institutes of higher learning must leverage their linkages with key stakeholders
