In wake of the heinous Delhi gang-rape, the Rajiv Gandhi Technical University (RGTU) has decided to provide 'value education' to Bhopal’s budding engineers from the next academic session.
Professor Piyush Trivedi, vice-chancellor of RGTU, said the objective of introducing 'value education' courses in engineering colleges is to inculcate better values and character building in the students.
While talking to a leading daily, Dr Trivedi said cases like the brutal Delhi gang-rape has made it important for educational institutions to implement value based education in colleges.
He also said that it is the duty of educational institutions to produce civilized future citizens.
"Values are the principles of standards that help improve the quality of life. It helps in understanding dos and don'ts of behaviour. They form the basics of character formation and personality development. RGPV is committed to develop engineers with all such values," Dr Trivedi said.
"Inhumane behaviour like Delhi gang-rape is hampering the very fabric of our society and culture. Therefore, there is an urgent need to introduce value based education dealing specifically with human values.
"RGPV will soon release its road-map of next five years. Several important decisions including opening of the new engineering colleges in the remote areas and others are involved," he added.
The RGTU is the governing body of engineering colleges in Bhopal.
