Verbal and Logical Ability Preparation of XAT 2018

Verbal and logical ability section is divided into two further sub – sections i.e. English usage and reading comprehension. There will be questions in the form of caselets in logical ability section. After quantitative section, this section has the second highest weightage. There will be 24 questions. This section has a wide syllabus which contains critical reasoning, para completion and para jumbles, analogy based on vocabulary, critical reasoning, assumption and statement etc.

Experts say the best way to prepare for this section is to read and practice a lot. This is the one and the best method for preparation of this section. Practicing two to three reading comprehension essays every way will improve your skills and will strengthen your preparation of this section. Moreover, you should start with the previous year’s question papers which will help you a lot in terms of English usage as well. If we talk about vocabulary, you need to pick some good books which are helpful in vocab building. One of such books is Word Power written by Norman Lewis. Keeping a pocket diary is really important however in this smart – age technology, it has been replaced by smart phone.

You can take up a challenge for yourself that you will learn at least 10 new words every day and will use them in your conversation. Using flash cards will be greatly helpful in this context. Instead of mere mugging up these words, you should understand the meaning and keep them in memory. For logical ability section, the important topic here is critical reasoning. There also caselets questions will be dominant. You won’t find much of theoretical study material in logical reasoning section, this all depends on practice.

Decision Making Preparation for XAT 2018

What sets XAT apart from other MBA entrance examinations is this section. Decision making is a section which is exclusive for this exam. The best way to prepare this section is practicing previous year’s question papers of XAT and developing an analytical bent of mind. As per the experts’ advice, these questions need a great logical and analytical approach and a clear and straight understanding of the concept and the situations. The case studies will ask you to interpret the information in a logical manner and do an analysis of the same and need to take decision after that. You will have to pick up an option which is a win win situation for all the stakeholders who are involved in the case. It has been observed that the students who are good at logical reasoning do well at decision making too.

Most of the time the questions require the candidates to go through a long text and then the candidate has to interpret the situation logically. Students generally don’t pay proper attention at the section at they believe that they would do it in the end which isn’t a good practice. Our main motto is to cover all the major topics and parts.

As we discussed before, decision making sets this exam different from other sections. For those who are quite new to this exam must be facing little difficulty with this section. Generally, the students are given a situation or a case study and they are asked two types of questions:

  •  What should be the ideal course of action to be taken in such situation?
  •  What has led to such a situation?

To answer such questions, one needs a great intensity of logical approach with a clear understanding of the case. Normally, a student will have to go through a long text material, and then needs to interpret the information given in a very logical manner. Therefore, generally, it also combines reading comprehension and logical reasoning. If you are good at these two sections, you will do well at decision making as well. Questions of XAT decision making can be classified as following:

Experts say at first you should start with questions based on financial issues and pure logic as there are less chances of making mistakes in such type of questions. There is a clear way, either you will solve them and will find an answer or you will not be able to do them at all. There is no confusion. The other side, questions based on ethical dilemmas and managerial issues may seem easier but the options given will lead you to confusion. A majority of the questions will be asked on managerial issues.

Followings are the seven things which one should be focused on while answering the questions of Decision Making

  •  Establish the stakeholders in any given situation

There will be multiple stakeholders, parties or people (the information given will be relevant to them) in every situation given to you. There you need to make a mental list of all these information and stakeholders mentioned.

  •  Holistic analysis of every problem

You should focus on holistic analysis. For this, you need to make sure that you are analyzing the problem from a stakeholder point of view. Avoid anything if the outcome neglects the one side of the story.

  •  Pick a point which has maximum benefit and lower danger

The main motive here is to come up with such a solution where there is minimum risk and maximum productivity. You should focus on a solution which is risk – free completely.

  •  Don’t include your personal opinions

You don’t have to favor any one side because you think it is right. This is a common thing that students often follow their own value system. But you need to take care that you don’t have to mix your personal judgment in the case.

  •  Avoid anything unethical

Don’t go for shortcuts or anything which involves unethical means of solution. These steps can never conclude a reasonable, logical answer.

  •  Avoid options which have unsubstantiated judgment

You will find some questions which are based on extreme scenarios but in fact such questions are spiced up with cleverly concealed opinions. You don’t have to be emotional while judging them. These questions will try to trap but you need to logical.

  •  Ask yourself if you are missing something

At times, there can be situations where you may miss any important element when you solve the problem. Ensure that you have done all the analysis based on the assumptions and logical understanding and make sure that you aren’t missing anything.
