According to a report by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), India needs about 89 lakh skilled workforces in the Electronics and Hardware sector by 2022 and about 1.8 crore skilled employees will be needed in the handloom and handicraft sector by 2022. Now that’s a lot of skill force we are talking about!

This is, but, just a small fraction of the enormity of the requirement of skilled work force in India. Every year, there are numerous opportunities in the Hotel Management, Aviation, Automotive sector, Healthcare & IT etc. Most of are busy chasing the Engineering or Management dream, even though we are not cut out for it. And the result? We end up being unemployed, or underpaid or just stuck in the rut.

But with the emphasis on providing training for curated jobs in each of the sectors mentioned above and more other, there are some niche training institutes that have opened up in India. CEDP Skill Institute - Mumbai is one such institute. HTCampus caught up Mr. Vasim Sheikh, Director at CEDP Skill Institute Mumbai to share his vision for the institute, what drives him and career scope of the students.

Excerpts from the interview:

From a Business Strategy Consultant to Director @CEDP Skill Institute – how did the transition happen?

The journey has been thought provoking and transforming, with plenty of learning as an individual from grass root level. The challenges that an individual faces for securing a job, that would help one to sustain in today’s time at the same time giving a content feeling of job satisfaction brings a proud smile on my face. That’s one of the main reasons of paradigm shift in my individual career perspective. This is my way of giving back to society, not just the education but competent skills linked with employment.

How does it feel to move to academics from a corporate set up?

I would not say there has been much difference in the whole working pattern, academics especially at CEDP Skill Institute where we pay a huge emphasis on each student getting a secure future for a satisfactory employment. We ensure the procedure is executed in a highly professional manner to ensure foolproof methodology. My experience in the corporate world comes pretty handy in training the team to outperform their benchmarks on a monthly basis.

In an era where MBA and Engineering dominates, how did the concept of CEDP come about?

Being a MBA/Engineering was always the fantasy of every average Indian household, but the stark reality is whether Engineering or an MBA degree guarantees a satisfying job? An average Indian household income curtails this fantasy of a huge percentage of students, apart from the academic performances of an individual. At CEDP we focused on what is the requirement of various industries at Blue collar level. We did our research and the results were highly surprising. An era where everyone complains about no jobs available, what we found out that jobs are available in plenty* (*for Skilled Individual). Thus started the journey of CEDP where we handpicked sectors such as Healthcare, Hospitality, Automotive and started training students of 12th grade and above as per requirement of industry norms, From pilot training batch of 4students & 1branch to over 400 students graduating from each branch every quarter, all I can say the history is in making.

What are the major challenges you have faced in setting up an institute of this stature?

Back in 2010 getting clients on board for Student internship was a major challenge, as Skill Training was an alien concept back then. Industry specific clients were skeptical in hiring a fresher with few months of classroom theoretical training. Slowly but steadily we kept a stringent control over the quality of training and grooming of students to ensure the Clients were comfortable in recruiting an intern for on-the-job training. As of today, we have over 300 clients across Mumbai in Healthcare, Automotive & Hospitality sectors who are our associates in contributing towards Skill India Mission.

Undoubtedly, there is an increasing demand for trained professional & vocational training in India today. What are the eligibility criteria to admission at CEDP?

Thanks to our visionary Hon. Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi, Skill India has lot more awareness and everyone now knows the importance of having skilled workforce for a vibrant India. Eligibility criteria is quite simple at CEDP Skill Institute:

  • Student needs to be 18 years of age, as employment criteria
  • Education wise, 10th/12th grade and above
  • Students who are pursuing graduation can also apply for various options of skill development training programs

Additionally, our expert councilors can also help students with a career aptitude test which would help them understand which way one should head for a bright career.

What is the difference in course curriculum followed for regular students (fresher’s) VS re-training of employees in an organization (people with experience)?

The course curriculum for a fresher starts from basics with specifications as per industry norms, the duration of the course would also be more in terms of classroom theory hours. A fresher may take some more time to adapt to the course requirements. So ample periodic test and field visits are conducted to incubate the students with How industry functions, thus avoid cultural shocks.

Re-Training of employees in an organization, involves in re-assessing the core competencies’ of an individual, and work out on fine tuning an employees over all product knowledge to the benefit of the organization. Most of these training’s are session based varying from a 6 hours session to a 7 days skill enhancing certification programs.

Who should take up the courses offered at CEDP?

I would say anyone and everyone, who has the passion for creating a different path of life, rather than following the trend. Any individual who is at least 18 years of age and has the interest to build a career in Healthcare, Automotive or Hospitality industry however due to financial or academic reason is unable to pursue the dreams. 

What are the various courses offered under Training and Education Delivery?

The courses carried out at CEDP Skill Institute are as follows: 
  • Skill Certificate in Automobile Technician – 1year 
  • Certificate In Nursing Assistant – 1 year 
  • Medical Laboratory Technician -2 years 
  • Diploma in Hotel Management -1 year

What model of teaching do you practice? (classroom, practical, industry or others?)

The training methodology at CEDP involves minimum 160 hour of classroom training which includes course specific videos, demos . We also take the students on various field visits for a better understanding of the industry functionality from a fresher point of view. Post the classroom training the students undergo an on-the-job-training which varies from 180 days to 360 days. This on-the-job-training is a paid internship and the students starts earning their first earnings of their lives. 

Besides providing training & education, CEDP provides end to end support in promoting, coordinating, regulating and streamlining the entire affiliation activities. How?

We at CEDP are on advisory panel with various UGC recognized universities of India and UK, where in we act as the affiliation provider to other educational institutes who wish to collaborate with universities for various professional courses. Our business development team looks after the documentation and due diligence process as per the university norms to ensure 100% transparency in affiliation process. 

How does your placement network work? 

We have an efficient Human Resource team that looks after the placements of our students for on-the-job-training as well as permanent placement post completion of on-the-job-training. The HR team on a weekly basis collaborated with new clients across the city across the various sectors that we cater to. The HR team also interacts with the students from the ongoing batches to groom them for the interviews prior to their OJT or permanent placements. The pre grooming helps the students to shrug off the interview jitters of students 

Could please specify some of the companies where your students have been placed?

For Automotive sectors we have Tata Motors , Maruti Fortpoint , Mahindra & Mahindra , Royal Enfield , Ducati , KTM , Ashok Leyland , Hyundai Motors , Auto Hangar Indian Motorcycles , Harley Davidson Seven Islands  etc as some of our esteemed clients where our students have been employed.
For Healthcare we have Asian Heart Hospital, Seven Hills Hospital, Fortis Hospital, Wokhardt Hospital Saifee Hospital, Suburban Diagnostics, Diagnolab , SRL , Ranbaxy etc are some of our esteemed clients who employ our students.
For Hospitality we have , Sofitel , The Trident , Renaissance , Meluha The Fern , Sahara Star , The Orchids, Jubilant food works , McDonalds , KFC  in India and Rotana Group of Hotels in UAE as our esteemed clients.

What will the average salary of the passing out students? And the highest?

An average salary that a person gets employed upon is between Rs. 7500 – Rs. 9000 with the highest start salary being Rs. 35000.

Can students aspire to get employment abroad after pursuing a course at CEDP?

Absolutely! Many of our hospitality students are working with various internationals chain of hotels across UAE, UK, Singapore & Australia. Students from Automotive course have a huge demand in India as well as overseas especially Europe and UAE.
