The Vinoba Bhave University in Hazaribagh has become the first university in Jharkhand to adopt a choicebased credit semester (CBCS) system in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The Union HRD ministry has implemented the CBCS in many universities in the country this year. A student can take credits by having unique combinations like physics with economics, microbiology with chemistry or environment sciences.

At a 12-hour meeting, the university senate, the highest statutory body of the varsity, formally approved the decision. Soon after the meeting, vicechancellor Dr Gurdeep Singh appealed to senate members to join hands to take VBU among the top 100 universities in the country.

No Jharkhand University finds a place in the top 100 universities of the country. VBU with a sprawling campus, a variety of courses, efficient faculty and meritorious students had the potential to join the top 100 league, officials said.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the 13th meeting of the senate was inaugurated by former vice chancellors KK Nag and MP Singh in the presence of present VC Gurdeep Singh and local MLA Manish Jaiswal.

In his presidential address Singh said VBU had the potential to become one of the top universities in the country. "We all have so many things to learn from each other," Singh said while enumerating his achievements and failures before the senate members.

He presented a roadmap for further development of the university and requested them to give their suggestions.

At the meeting, the senate approved a budget of '308 crore for the university's development.
