Faculty

There are about 97 regular, full-time faculty members at IIMA. They come from different regions of the country. They belong to different religions and speak different mother tongues. All of them (except 2 per cent) have doctoral degrees. Most of them have had some work experience or part of their graduate education abroad. Some combine corporate experience with teaching and academic research. Faculty members enjoy tremendous freedom in choosing what to teach, how to teach, and what research interests to pursue. They regulate themselves. They subject themselves to evaluation both by peers and by students. The high expectations from peers and students keep them on their toes. The Institute has over 60 research and academic associates assisting the faculty with research and teaching at any given time. Bright young PhDs and post-graduates interested in academics go through a rigorous selection process before they are allowed to work as research associates or academic associates. In the two or three years that they typically spend at the Institute, they are exposed to excellence in both research and teaching. They learn so much that many business schools hire them as faculty.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) Provided four long duration programmes, all residential: Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), Post-Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX), and Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). The first three are equivalent to MBA; the last one is equivalent to PhD. These are all diploma rather than degree programmes because the Institute has stayed out of the university system in order to preserve autonomy and maintain flexibility in curricular decisions. Around 300 students are selected every year from among  2,00,000 applicants. The selections are based on their performance in an aptitude test and a personal interview.

The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (in case of the candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Differently Abled (DA) or Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category, this is relaxed to 45%), of any of the universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.  The bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent. The percentage obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be based on the practice followed by the institution/university from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case of the candidate being awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the equivalence would be based on the equivalence certified by the institution/university from where they have obtained the bachelor's degree. In case the institution/university does not have any scheme for converting the CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by IIMA by dividing the obtained CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the resultant by 100.
 
A candidate appearing for the final year bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed the degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. Such a candidate must produce a certificate from the principal/head of the department/registrar/director of the institution/university certifying that the candidate is currently in the final year/is awaiting final results and has obtained at least 50% marks or equivalent (45% in case of the candidate belonging to SC/ST/PWD category) based on latest available grades/marks. Such a candidate, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by June 30, 2017 from the principal/head of the department/registrar/director of the institution/university (issued on or before June 30, 2017) stating that they have completed all the requirements (the result may, however, be awaited) for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of issue of the certificate. Their admission will be confirmed only when the candidate submits the mark-sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by the principal/head of the department/registrar/director of the institution/university with at least 50% marks (45% in case of the candidate belonging to SC/ST/PWD category). It is mandatory for a final year student, who is provisionally admitted, to submit the mark-sheet and degree certificate of the final year bachelor’s degree examination held on or before June 30, 2017 (including supplementaries, if any), to be eligible for admission to the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) batch 2017-19.The deadline for submission of the mark-sheet and the certificate is December 31, 2017. Course details

The two-year full-time Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is the flagship programme of IIMA. Its main objective is to develop young men and women into competent professional managers, capable of working in any sector of organized activity, proceeding leadership and achieving excellence in performance while contributing to the welfare of the larger society. The programme specifically attempts to:

  • Equip students with the required conceptual and interpersonal skills and sense of social purpose for managerial decision-making,
  • Develop leadership capabilities to act as change agents and be a source of motivation in the organizations they work in,
  • Nurture the desire to excel in performance without compromising integrity, honesty and fairness.

Admission Criteria:

An overseas Indian category candidate who applies with a valid GMAT score* instead of a CAT score should have a total scaled score of at least 700. Indians resident outside India fall under the "Overseas Indian candidates" category. To qualify as an Indian resident abroad, a candidate should be an Indian passport holder who expects to live, work or study outside India for at least 12 months continuously as on December 31, 2016. The next stage of the admission process, i.e., Academic Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI), will be held in India. Candidates called for this stage will have to make their own travel arrangements and produce evidence of having qualified for the "Overseas Indian candidates" category.

The Two-Year Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agribusiness Management (PGP-FABM) is designed to transform dynamic and determined individuals into excellent leaders to meet the demand posed by the managerial challenges in emerging food, agribusiness, retail, microfinance, global supply chain and other allied sectors. The objective of the Post-graduate Programme in Food and Agri-business Management is to transform young men and women into competent professional managers for the agriculture, food, agri-business, rural and allied sectors. The programme caters to the needs of enterprises serving these sectors, both domestic and international. The programme will build sensitivity to domestic and international market needs and span the entire agricultural value chain. 

 

Admission Criteria:


The selection of candidates for admission to the 2015-17 batch of PGP-ABM at IIM Ahmedabad is a two-step process.
In the first step, candidates will be short-listed for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI) from among candidates who have applied for the programme and have a valid CAT/GMAT[1] score and satisfy the eligibility criteria for the programme. An overseas category candidate who applies with a GMAT score instead of a CAT score should have a total scaled score of at least 700.

B) Minimum Age of 27 years as on 31st March of the year in which the PGPX programme commences. (E.g. For PGPX 17-18 commencing in April 2017, the candidate should have completed 27 years of age by March 31, 2017, i.e. must be born on or before March 31, 1990.) There is no upper age limit.

C) Valid GMAT score (GMAT scores are valid for five years from the test date to the application deadline date of the round in the candidate is appliying. The earliest acceptable GMAT test date for the two rounds are: Round 1- 11 September 2011   and Round 2 -14 November 2011)

PGPX is a one-year, full time residential programme for executives with substantial work experience leading to a One Year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives. PGPX students are selected through a rigorous admissions process that includes GMAT, leadership profiling and personal interviews. The design of PGPX is built on the Institute's well established experience of designing and running postgraduate management programmes for exceptionally bright students and a wide range of executive education programmes for practicing managers from many countries.

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the doctoral programme of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. IIMA’s 136-acre campus is a veritable oasis. It is green throughout the year. In summer, when mercury stays above 40° celsius most of the day in the city and the semi-arid region around it, lawns and leafy trees keep the temperature on the campus several degrees lower. In winter, tens of thousands of migratory birds descend on the campus. Wide corridors and open spaces with classrooms, library, and faculty offices within easy reach for everyone, encourage interaction and debate – the heart of management education. The design of the campus translates that educational philosophy into buildings that are visually appealing and inspiring. Students of architecture come from far and wide to take a close look at these buildings and to discover how design of buildings captures a philosophy.

Hostel

Students' rooms are fully furnished and equipped with a PC, telephone connection and 24/7 Internet connectivity. Each block has a pantry, washing machine, oven, stove and assorted conveniences that students are likely to need for a comfortable stay. For married participants, separate accommodation is available on campus.

Classroom

There are six classrooms and five seminar rooms in the teaching wing. This is in addition to the seminar and conference rooms in the faculty wings. To facilitate case discussions, each classroom is an amphitheater. There are sixty-five revolving seats, with each seat having the nametag of the student. All classrooms have network connectivity to facilitate presentations. The new campus will add 5 more classrooms, 12 seminar rooms and an auditorium.

Laboratory

There are more than 90 high end manageable network switches which handle the internal data traffic. Every workplace on the campus including student rooms in dormitories, faculty offices, classrooms, management development centre, computer lab, FPM lab, and administrative offices has network connectivity. Using long range ethernet technology, faculty /staff residences have been also provided network connectivity to the Institute's Intranet. The Institute has put a wireless layer (wi-fi) on top of this highly dense network with high level of security using username password based authentication. A Firewall is also placed to provide higher security. A storage server with VPN based access and username password based authentication is also in place for accessing data outside the campus which is currently for professors.

Extra - Curricular

The campus has five dining halls, two restaurants, a drugstore, a primary health centre, a gymnasium, offices of two travel agents and three courier services, and a full-service post office. It also has an ATM and a bank that offers all banking services including foreign exchange. For those interested in sports and games, there is a cricket ground, a football court, a tennis court, and several shuttlecock courts apart from facilities for indoor games such as table tennis. The Louis Kahn Plaza doubles up in the evenings and nights as a perfect place for playing Frisbee.

Library

The Vikram Sarabhai Library is an invaluable resource for students, researchers and faculties of business and management. The library has over the years built a robust collection of over 1,74,543 books, 42,004 bound volumes, 527 current subscription to journals and news papers, 2191 working papers, and many other resources like thesis (260), student's project reports (1709), CDs (1932) and videos (132). The library, spread over 20,120 sq. ft., also provides access to the best of business and management related digital resources through its subscription to various databases consisting of scholarly and industry relevant content. The library has set up 3i (Information Infrastructure for Institution) network to provide business, industry, environment, agricultural and economic information to the users.
