About Indira Gandhi National Open University, School of Foreign Languages
The School of Foreign Languages is one of the 21 Schools of Studies at IGNOU, established in 2007, with an aim to:
- Offer innovative, flexible and cost-effective foreign language programmes to learners from all sections of the society.
- Offer programmes based on the specific needs of the learners.
- Promote communication across borders and countries.
- In view of the existing demand due to its multiple practical applications, the study of foreign languages is gaining lots of importance in the academic studies, and the demand is growing continuously.
The School works in collaboration with other Schools of the University to develop manpower for a number of sectors, like foreign language requirements for scientists, agricultural experts and trade specialists.
The globalisation of business has led to the demand of specialized foreign language experts. The expertise in foreign languages can be a valuable addition for all manner of professionals. It also offers programmes specific to the requirements of organizations like the Indian navy.

Eminent Faculty Members at Indira Gandhi National Open University, School of Foreign Languages
A variety of teaching and learning techniques are employed to impart knowledge and skills to students at Indira Gandhi National Open University, School of Foreign Languages in its various departments.
Dr Sushant Kumar Mishra specializes in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics (which includes the domain area of translation), Comparative Literature and Indian grammatical Traditions. With research experience in Semiotics, literary theories and comparative literature, he has been long associated with Department of French Studies and Department of Linguistics of BHU, Varanasi before joining School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU. Dr SK Mishra has been associated with projects on translation of Sahitya Akademi and has various other translation and research articles published. Dr SK Mishra has been associated with Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthanam and has written units for the distance education Certificate course on Sanskrit linguistics on the following topics:

- Role of grammer in Poetry
Dr SKMishra has also been entrusted with the task of writing units for M.A. in Translation Studies on the following topics:

Dr SK Mishra is also currently associated with the Sahitya Akademi Project on Indian Poetics and is Contributing for entries on Maithili. He knows Portuguese and Spanish. He has been to Portugal twice on Research Fellowships and has written many Research Papers on Portuguese literature..
Dr Mohammad Saleem is an assistant Professor of Arabic at the School of Foreign Languages. His area of specialisation is teaching and learning Arabic as a foreign language. He writes in Arabic Urdu and English and published more than thirty articles in all the three languages in various reputed magazines and news papers. He is the first to advocate new methods and techniques for teaching Arabic as foreign language in his research work for M Phil titled Methods of Arabic language study in Indian madrasas between teaching and achievement and PhD titled Teaching and learning Arabic as a foreign language in India,problems and prospects with twenty model lessons.
His other areas of interest are culture and literature of Pre Islamic Period. He also takes keen interest in Arabic, Urdu and Persian Poetry
Currently, Dr Saleem has designed along with several young Arabic experts, a very simple, innovative and learner friendly study material for the learners at IGNOU. The material is increasingly becoming popular both is India and Arab countries.
He is also looking after Persian programmes in IGNOU..
Vikash Kumar Singh is Assistant Professor (Spanish) at the School of Foreign Languages, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. He is responsible for the supervision of all the aspects of the Spanish language courses.
His early dream was to be a foreign language speaker; therefore his first degree (B.A. Hons.) was in Hispanic Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2003. Later, he obtained an MA in Hispanic Studies from the same university in 2005 and Post Graduate Doctoral Research Studies in Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (Máster Oficial en Enseñanza de Español como Lengua Extranjera) from the Centro de Formación de Profesores del Instituto Cervantes, Alcalá de Henares and Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, Santander, Spain in 2007.
During his pre-doctoral research studies he was actively involved in the research-teaching practice (A1-B1 level as per the CEFR) at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Madrid-Jesús Maestro, & Centro de Formación de Profesores, Instituto Cervantes, Spain. The results of this experience were accounted in the research work: Análisis de necesidades de los alumnos indios de ELE en las Universidades indias- Recomendaciones para un Currículo centrado en el alumno, submitted to the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, Santander, Spain in 2007 under the fellowship of Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (Ministry of External Affairs and Cooperation, Govt. of Spain).
He was awarded Diploma in Spanish Language (Superior level) by Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, Santander, Spain in 2004; Certified Examiner of DELE (Diploma of Spanish as Foreign Language)-official accreditation issued by Instituto Cervantes, Spain on behalf of Ministry of Education & Culture of Spain in 2006; and Diploma of Spanish (Superior level) – official accreditation of the degree of fluency of the Spanish Language, issued and recognized by the Ministry of Education & Culture of Spain in 2008. He has also done Advanced Diploma of Proficiency in Portuguese and Certificate of Proficiency in Italian from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
After his return from Spain, he started teaching Spanish at Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian & Latin-American Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Embassy of Peru in India (under India-Peru Friendship Association), New Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Instituto Cervantes, New Delhi, Young Women’s Christian Association, New Delhi as a visiting faculty first and later, as Assistant Professor at School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU..
Mr Shivaji Bhaskar is Assistant Professor in School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU. He did his MA from Centre of Russian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University and M Phil from the School of International studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Prior to joining IGNOU, Mr Shivaji Bhaskar worked in the capacity of interpreter for various organisations of high repute like National Institute of Rural Development and others to name a few. Presently he is coordinating the development of the Russian Language Programme.
His area of specialisation is Area Studies, Teaching of Russian as Foreign Language, Culture and Civilization of Russia, Translation of Scientific and Social Science material and Interpretation.
Workshop & Seminars
- A one day seminar on “The use of computer programmes and linguistic equipments at the lessons of the Russian Language” in collaboration with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, New Delhi was organised and conducted on 15th Sept, 2011 at the Convention Centre, IGNOU.
- A national seminar on the writings of Great Russian writer Alexander Pushkin's writings was organised by the School of Foreign Languages to mark the Russian Language Day on 6th June, 2011.
