The National Law Institute University is a law school located in Bhopal, Established by the State of Madhya Pradesh. NLIU has regularly been among the three best law schools in India. It launched its first academic programme in 1998, with Indian jurist V.S Rekhi as the Director. The university offers B.A, LL.B (Hons.) degree course through the CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) exam. The university also offers LL.M degree course. NLIU is recognized by the BCI.

NLIU is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Patron of the University of the Hon. Chief Justice of India. It works closely with the M.P High Court, as well as the National Judicial Academy. Currently NLIU is home to the Rajiv Gandhi National Cyber Law Center, which was recognized by MHRM, Govt. of India.

Course details

B.A.LL.B (Hons.) course is of five years duration with a trimester system. There are three trimesters in a year and each trimester is of three months duration. In each trimester students are taught four core courses and at least two skill courses like Computer, English, Legal Writing, Accountancy, Research Methodology etc. In the final year in addition to the compulsory courses students have to choose from a number of optional courses.

NLIU follows a system of continuous evaluation. In each trimester a student has to undertake a mid term examination an end term examination and a project work (written and presentation) in each paper and a viva-voce examination.

LL.M. course is of One year duration and is divided into Three Trimester. University offers specialization in Human Rights, Intellectual Property & Business Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Business Law and Criminal Law. Allocation of LL.M. subject specializations will be done at the time of admission on the basis of merit. A specialization will be offered subject to the availability of faculty and sufficient number of students opting for it.

The Master of Science in Cyber Law and Information Security (MSCLIS) course aims to develop the skills required to address the issues related to cyber space and Information Security on technological grounds and relate these to legal problems. It aims to give a detailed understanding of national and international regulatory paradigms and its relevance with respect to Cyber Law.

The construction of the new campus complex has begun under the supervision of internationally well-known Architects M/s SEMAC Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. Every care has been taken to ensure that the hillock's natural character is undisturbed and rather enhanced. It manifests a majestic blend of nature with modern edifices.

Hostel
The University offers separate residential facilities for men and women. All residents are provided with single rooms each having modular study and computer table, spacious steel almirah and cupboard. The Halls boast of manicured lawns, gymnasium, common room fitted with colour television and cable network, reading room and indoor sports facilities. The residents are also provided with 24 hours hot and cold water and laundry services.
Library
The library is well equipped with over 30,000 volumes consisting of reference books, back volumes of gyan mandir journals and law reports, current legal periodicals and a wealth of statistical material and rare collections. The students maintain the computerized ‘knowledge management system’ that adds around 5000 student projects to the database annually and aids in disseminating information for research. Photocopying facility is available within the premises.
