
Infrastructure Overview: Since the department is housed within the campus of the general college it has access to several facilities and can avail of multiple opportunities. The department has spacious rooms, audio visual facilities, tutorials and laboratories for geography, psychology, and other science. The computer laboratory offers hand on experience to the trainees.
Hostel Details: This hostel is for the male students of St Xavier’s College only. It is under the management of the College. The Superintendent is directly responsible to the Principal of the College and stands in Loco Parentis to all the host elites. A student who fails without genuine reason to attend his classes will be asked to leave the Hostel. A student who is not promoted in the College or fails in his Examination is liable not to be taken back in the Hostel the following year. Provision for staying in the Hostel is for one year only. This hostel accommodates the students of First Year only.
Laboratory Details:Offices, laboratories, library are all computerised for providing faster and better services. St. Xavier's College has highly equipped Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Computer Science and Biology (Botany / Zoology) Labs.
Classrooms Details: Class rooms are large and capable of accommodating a large number of students without cramping. They are surrounded by large spacious verandahs for students to move and breathe freely. The college stage and auditorium that you see today, has come through a historic process of evolution and gradual transformation. The earliest roots of this stage goes back to the 'Sans Soucci Theatre', which was burned down by fire in 1843. But the spirit of Sans Soucci survived the holocaust, and in 1859, when the premises became the property of Belgain Jesuits, who called it St. Xavier's, theatre came to life again. The St. Xavier's stage found a place of pride in the cultural life of Calcutta.
Library Details:The Library provides services to the students, staffs, research scholars, faculty members and Fathers of the college through an automated mode by using LIBSYS 4 (Release 5.0) software. The catalogue-search and circulation systems are fully automated at present. Search for any document can be made through Online-Public-Access-Catalogue (OPAC) and the circulation system is barcode-based. The Web-OPAC will be started shortly.
Extra Curricular Details:St. Xavier’s College NCC was formed in 1950 under the able leadership of Prof. P.C. Neogi. It falls under the jurisdiction of 20 (BENGAL) BATTALION NCC. Since its inception the unit has served extraordinarily in various fields and achieved prestigious honour and distinct recognition from international, national and state events. Cadets of this college are regularly selected for the Youth Exchange Programme of Government of India and the NCC Republic Day Camp. St. Xavier’s College cadets also participate in various adventure training camps/courses like mountaineering, trekking and parasailing. After successful completion of the NCC course, many students of this college join the Armed Forces and Para Military Forces as officers and also in various security services of multi-national companies. As a part of their training, NCC cadets provide assistance to Kolkata Police in traffic management and are also assigned to give security cover in prestigious college events. NCC parades take place either on the college grounds or at Fort William on Sundays. Since 2005 the College NCC has also been opened for girl students. At the St Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata, philanthropy is not a goal in itself but a means by which the college as part of a larger society tries to transform the lives of the marginalized and the underprivileged, whilst developing their students into responsible citizens. In keeping with the vision of producing men and women for others, the college has initiated a number of philanthropic works within and outside the city. All these activities have been channelised by its social work department which comprises of committed students and supported by the College Alumni Association and other generous funding organizations and individuals. The National Service Scheme (NSS), which is under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, functions through this department and all the social projects are undertaken by the NSS students under the leadership of their director. The motto of NSS “Not Me but You” enhances the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service in society. The Department is headed by the Director, along with the NSS Board Members comprising of about 14 students from various departments.
