Experts point to the scope in teaching and research, especially with the growth of new institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research; National Institute of Science Education and Research - Bhubaneswar; Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS), jointly launched by Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the University of Mumbai; and of course, the IITs. Organisations such as Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the DAE are opening more campuses. Also, there is a demand for school teachers while skills learnt in a science programme are useful in non-science domains as well.
Dipankar Chatterjee, president, Indian Academy of Sciences, adds, “It is a tremendous feeling to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as in schools. It seems several private colleges will open soon and we have a shortage of teachers.”
