The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is conducted every year by the Karnataka Government (specifically the Karnataka Examinations Authority-KEA) for the admission in Engineering, Medical/ Dental/ Ayurveda /Homoeopathy / Unani /Naturopathy & Yoga /Technology colleges within the state of Karnataka for the seats that fall within the share of the state government. The first exam was held in 1984.
A candidate must appear for PCB subjects in case of Medical / Dental / Ayurveda /Homoeopathy / Unani / Naturopathy& Yoga courses and PCM subjects in case of Engineering /Technology courses in the Common Entrance Test conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority, Bangalore. The question papers of the Common Entrance Test will be mostly based on the First and Second PUC syllabi prescribed by the Department of Pre-University Education of Karnataka State. The KCET will be held across 2 days in 4 different sessions for four subjects. On the first day, test will be conducted for Biology and Mathematics subjects in 2 sessions and on the next day test will be conducted for Physics and Chemistry subjects in 2 sessions. There is NO negative marking for wrong answers but no marks will be provided if more than one oval is marked for a particular question in the OMR sheet. The candidate should mark the correct answer by completely shading only one circle against a question number, using BLUE or BLACK ink ball point pen.
A Kannada language test is also conducted on the following day of the KCET for claiming the eligibility for Government seats under Horanadu & Gadinadu Kannadiga clauses and whose mother tongue is Kannada, Tulu or Kodava. Such candidates will have to appear for the 'Common Entrance Test - 2010' in a test centre located in Bangalore only.
Since the question papers of the Common Entrance Test will be mostly based on the First and Second PUC syllabi prescribed by the Department of Pre-University Education of Karnataka State, the first step of your preparation strategy should be to get thorough with textbooks prescribed from school. These books if studied properly will definitely prepare you for the entrance exam in the most right manner. Once you have done the groundwork, you can start referring to additional books to strengthen your concepts and practice more questions. Some books that can be used are Dinesh Karnataka Common Entrance Test Biology by K.N. Bhatia, Dinesh Karnataka Common Entrance Test Chemistry by Ravinder Chadda, Higher Secondary Biology- Part 1 and part 2 etc.
