More about Andhra University

Andhra University (AU) is one of the oldest educational institutions in the country, and is also the first to be regarded as a residential and teaching-cum-affiliating University, mainly devoted to post-graduate teaching and research. It is a public university located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It was established in 1926 and shared affiliating responsibilities with Madras University in the initial years. Its campus covers an area of 171 hectares (422 acres). This University is constituted by Madras Act, 1926.

The University offers 313 Courses in Arts, Commerce, Management, Science & Technology, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy and Education. The University has five constituent colleges and four AU Campuses.

The University includes 121 buildings of Academic, Administrative and support services.The University also has student services and welfare centres like post and telegraph office, Banking facilities, University employment and Guidance bureau, training and placement centre and a sports complex including a Gymnasium Hall. The other infrastructural facilities available in the University include: Academic Staff College, Computer Centre and Press & Publications division. The University campus has 23 hostels for men which can accommodate more than 3200 students and 10 hostels exclusively for women with a capacity of more than 2000 seats. Two Hostels are specially constructed for foreign students. The University also has two Residential Health Centres one at south campus and the other at north campus and a homoeo dispensary. The University has four Guest Houses, Central Canteen and four canteens at various locations, Women Waiting Halls, Faculty Club and Schools for Employee's Children.

There are 636 affiliated colleges spread across five districts under the territorial jurisdiction of Andhra University. The enrolment in Affiliated Colleges is more than 1.5 Lakhs.

Directorate of Admissions, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam invites applications from eligible candidates for admission through Andhra University Common Entrance Test (AUCET) into various Science, Arts, Engineering and Law Courses offered in Campus Colleges of Andhra University (AU), Visakhapatnam, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University (BRAU), Srikakulam, P.G. Centres, and Colleges affiliated to AU & BRAU offering P.G. Courses.

Candidates from other recognised Universities are considered for admission into PG Arts and Science courses only if they possess a three-year Bachelor Degree of 10+2+3 or 12+3 or 11+1+3 pattern, with the prescribed minimum percentage of marks, unless otherwise specified. Candidates who acquired Bachelor Degree by Distance Education without 10+2+3 pattern are also eligible for admission into P.G. Courses, subject to submission of residence certificate.

Guidelines for filling-up of unfilled seats in affiliated colleges through AUCET:

1. (a) 50% in the qualifying examination is the minimum required percentage for some reserved category candidates (45% for SC/ST candidates) for admission into Science courses.

(b) A pass in the qualifying examination is sufficient for admission into Arts & Commerce courses. The requirement for the M.Ed Course is a pass with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks for some reserved category candidates (45% for SC/ST candidates).

 (c) Candidates passed in instant examinations of 2017 are also eligible for admission.

Candidates should fulfil the eligibility criteria for the subject as specified in AUCET-2017 brochure. If there are no candidates available with AUCET rank, the seats may be filled with candidates without AUCET rank. In such cases, the candidate has to pay Rs.1500/- towards Registration and Processing fee. Processing fee of Rs.500/- per seat filled (vacant and management seats) will have to be paid in the form of D.D. drawn in favour of The Registrar, A.U. Common Entrance Test & Admission Account, payable at Visakhapatnam. The College under management quota should admit only those students with or without Rank in the AUCET-2017 with required eligibility criteria as per information brochure. 

Candidates without Rank should pay Rs. 1500/- towards Registration and Processing fee. The Amount to be paid to the University for Candidates with Ranks :(a) For Sciences (Rs.2830+500=3330), (b) For M.A./M.Com/M.H.R.M (Rs.2730+500=3230), (c) For M.Ed. (Rs.3390+500=3890), (d) For Computer Science (Rs.3490+500=3990). An additional amount of 20% of the total course fee has to be paid for Candidates admitted Under Management Quota.

Sports

Andhra University Physical Education Department was established on 27th August 1927. 'Compulsory Physical training and regular medical inspection of all the students should be introduced in all the affiliated colleges' was adopted as a resolution on this day.

A significant advancement was shown in the field of games as per the GIC report.

Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences was given a new nomenclature in 2014 and many subjects that were imparted to students of master’s course were based on sports as well along with social sciences. The Department was renamed as the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences after this date.

Library

The Andhra University Library began its journey in the year 1927 and it covers two branch Libraries namely Engineering College and Law College. The total plinth area of the building is about 60,000 sqft and the main functionaries of the Library are the Circulation, Binding, Periodicals, Reference, Acquisition, and Computers sections. The Library has a huge collection of books and about 17000 users. There are important journals, e-journals, palm leaf manuscript, microfilms, and paper and it works as a huge knowledge base for the students, teachers, research scholars, and R&D wings of local industries such as Simhadri Power Project, Bharat Heavy plates & Vessels, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Indian Navy and its several establishments, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Coramandel Fertilisers, Hindustan Zink Ltd, etc.
