More about Gulbarga University

Gulbarga University (GUG) was established on 10th September 1980 by an act of the State of Karnataka. From 1970 to 1980, it was a Postgraduate centre of Karnataka University. The main campus is situated on 860 acres of land at Kalaburagi, Karnataka. It is a State University established as per the provisions of the Karnataka State University Act 1976/2000. It has the jurisdiction over four Revenue Districts viz. Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur and Yadgir. GUG has 38 post-graduate departments and 4 post-graduate centres located at Krishnadevarayanagar, Bellary, Raichur and Bidar. The University enrols about 3500 students every year for various post-graduate, M.Phil. and PhD programs in various disciplines. There are 305 colleges affiliated to this University which offer courses in arts, fine arts, music, social sciences, science & technology, commerce, education and law.

The University has twenty-seven (27) ongoing projects worth Rs. 227.00 Lakhs funded by various agencies of Central & State Govt. Five Departments have received grants under a UGC Special Assistance Program and the Department of Physics is allocated Rs. 1.30 Lakhs under a Special Assistance Program (Phase II) of UGC. The university has received Rs. 533 Lakhs under XII plan grants of UGC. The university has also strong research collaboration with International, National and State organizations/institutions. GUG also has collaboration with HKRDB for implementing knowledge projects.

For Admissions to PG Courses for Faculty of Science and Technology and Faculty of Arts, a candidate is required to have passed concerned degree examination from a recognized university with not less than 50% aggregate marks at the Bachelor’s Degree course as a whole.

For Admissions to P.G. Courses in Faculty of Commerce and Management, a student is required to have passed B.Com. / B.B.M. / B.C.S. examination from a recognized university with not less than 50% aggregate marks at the Bachelor’s Degree course as a whole.

The Candidate seeking admission to the first semester of M.B.A. course shall be required to have passed any degree examination from a recognized university with not less than 50% aggregate marks at the Bachelor’s Degree course as a whole and in the case of SC / ST candidates the score should be at least 45% aggregate marks. The Course is also open to the students who have passed the three years L.L.B. course after a degree or five years L.L.B. course after 10+2 or P.U.C., with at least 45% of aggregate marks in L.L.B.

For admission into M.Phil. courses, the candidate should have a Master’s Degree from a recognized university with not less than 50% aggregate marks.

The infrastructure at Gulbarga University aims at bridging the gap between knowledge and resources available to the students by offering several facilities including Computer Centre, Guest House, Health Centre, Library, National Service Scheme, Prasaranga, SC/ST Cell, Sports, Student Housing, and University Science Instrumentation Centre.

Several Placement opportunities are available for the students and two centres namely Centre for Competitive Excellence and Career Counselling Cell are present wherein:

  • Centre for Competitive Excellence organizes various training programs for youth to prepare them for the present competitive job market like programs for personality development, Communication skills, coaching for Bank, LIC, Railways and other Competitive Examinations like NET, SLET, GRE, CAT, GMAT etc. including IAS and KAS. At present, the Centre is running Corporate Professional Diploma Course of three months duration and it is being conducted by TMC Mumbai.
  • There is a Career Counselling Cell that aims to make the students aware about employment opportunities in Higher Education in India and abroad, Scholarships etc. Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Board.

The University provides hostel facilities to the students wherein there are five gents hostels and three ladies hostels on the main campus with approximately 1100 students staying in those hostels. It also provides facilities like boarding, lodging, reading rooms, visitors room, common prayer/recreation halls, indoor games, newspaper/Magazines, television, telephones, separate kitchen, and dining hall etc. to ensure comfortable living for all students in all the hostels and in case of emergencies, doctors, medical facilities, and transportation are also provided.

Laboratory

The University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC)  is established in 1993 as a special scheme of UGC in Gulbarga University. It caters to the needs of all Science Departments and carries out design, fabrication, calibration, testing, and servicing of Scientific types of equipment and analysis of Samples required for research and teaching from various Science Departments. There are short-term courses/ training programs organized for the benefit of students and faculty of the University. They also provide several Infrastructural equipments which include Generator set, Laboratory Signal generators, Oscilloscope, Multimeters, Power supplies and tools, Pulse generator etc.

Sports

The University has established excellent infrastructural facilities in sports. The Physical Education Department has well-qualified staff members, coaches and instructors to guide the motivated sportspersons. Excellent indoor stadium having four courts and a well-equipped gymnasium with a capacity of 1750 audience in the gallery has been established. The University also has an outdoor stadium with a 400-metre track for various events. The University has developed a Football ground, two Hockey grounds, two Volleyball courts, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Basketball courts, Badminton tennis courts, Ball badminton Tennis court, two Cricket grounds, four table tennis courts. Besides, modern gymnasium facilities are also provided for the benefit of the students and the faculty.

Extra - Curricular

There is a Central Academic Computer Centre that caters to the needs of Administrative sections and various departments wherein training is given to students of Arts and Social Science Departments. Internet facility is also provided to all students.

Library

Gulbarga University Library is ideally situated and easily accessible by all the departments and student housing. The University Library makes sincere efforts to provide user-focused services having over 2,27,831 books, subscribes 654 scientific journals, Sixteen CD-ROM databases (Current + Archival), 5800 dissertation/theses and technical reports, microfilm, microfiche, conference papers and rare books. The Library is at the core of research and learning at the University and automated its in-house activities and services using KOHA – an integrated open source software using cloud technology. Virtual Learning Resource Center and Digital Library (VLRC & DL), with 150 computer systems and three main servers, a giant leap into information age is at the heart of the University Learning experience supporting e-LTR (e-Learning Teaching and Research), provides access to UGC INFONET e-resources (12,000 e-journals+ & databases), Internet and e-learning, course materials and e-books using one Gbps leased line connectivity under NMEICT Project.
