More about Indian Veterinary Research Institute

Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) was set up on 9th December, 1889, then named as Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory, at Pune IVRI Deemed University (Maharashtra). In 1893 it was shifted to Mukteswar (Uttrakhand). To expand the activities of the institute, it was eventually established in 1913 at Izatnagar, Bareilly (UP), to carry out large scale production of sera and vaccines. IVRI was conferred with the status of Deemed to be University in 1983 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (1956). The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has the administrative control of the institute.

IVRI Institute at its headquarters functions through 22 research divisions and 3 sections, 400 acres livestock and fodder production farms, feed technology unit, a modern computerised library, engineering section, medical hospital, etc. In addition to the main campus spread over 758.61 acres area, there are 4 regional stations at Pune, Kolkata, Srinagar and Palampur; and 2 campuses at Bengaluru (Karnataka) and Mukteswar (Uttrakhand), along with other functional units.

The Institute, the largest of its kind in South-east Asia, is renowned for its notable contributions to all facets of livestock and poultry health, production technology and postgraduate education. It has been recognized Centre for Advanced Studies in Animal Nutrition, and Animal Physiology and Centre of Excellence in Animal Biotechnology by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.

IVRI has association/collaborations with several national and international agencies to create prospects for research and development, launching new initiatives, education, and development of strategies for their implementation. The university has undertaken various extramural funded projects under DRDO, NABARD, ICAR CESS Fund, Network Outreach projects, etc, alongwith collaborative projects with UK, World Bank, European Commission, Switzerland and Australia.

The institute provides masters' and doctoral programmes in 22 and 19 disciplines respectively. Additionally, it also conducts various diploma courses, short term national and international training programmes, short courses to impart knowledge about with latest development in veterinary and animal sciences.

The academic year of IVRI consists of two semesters of about 20 weeks duration each.  The schedule of the sessions is as follows:

• I Semester : August to January

• II Semester : February to July

Application forms for admissions can be can be obtained from the Assistant Administrative Officer, Izatnagar campus or can be be downloaded from Institute website. Application fee is Rs. 1200/- for General/OBC/Sponsored/ Physically Handicapped (General, OBC) category and Rs. 1000/- for SC/ST/Physically Handicapped (SC,ST) category candidates. Admission to the doctoral programmes will be held on the basis of All India Written Entrance Examination followed by an Interview and further subject to Medical/Physical Fitness of the candidate. There are options for scholarship and reservations based upon certain criteria: 15% seats for Scheduled Caste, 7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribe, 27% seats for Other Backward Category (OBC) and 3% for Physically Challenged (PH) candidates are reserved.

Hostel
