More about Jadavpur University

The Jadavpur University was established on 24th December, 1955. The University has got an 'A' Grade from NAAC. It is a public university established under Government of West Bengal with concurrence of Government of India. The university has been recognized by University Grants Commission as a ‘University with Potential for Excellence’.

It has got recognitions from the following: 

• All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE)

• Council of Architecture

• National Council for Technical Education

• Indira Gandhi National Open University

• University Grants Commission


The University is also honored as:

• Member of SLYFF (RYOICHI SASAKAWA YOUNG LEADERS FELLOWSHIP FUND) Institutions for a decade.

• Internationally, the university has been ranked 601-650 by the QS World University Rankings of 2018; 601-800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University ranking of 2018, 101-110 I Asia, and 99 amongst BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings of 2017.

• The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked Jadavpur University 9th among engineering colleges in India in 2017, 12 overall and 5th among universities.


The University, with 67.6 acres of area, is situated at Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik Road, Jadavpur, Kolkata, West Bengal. A new campus was surfaced at Salt Lake City with 21.3 acres of area. Jadavpur University has got 36 departments in total and offers 39 Undergraduate (UG), 57 Postgraduate (PG), 14 M Phil and 14 PhD programmes in various streams including Arts, Engineering and Science, amongst others.

The university also grants research degrees to students from 13 noted national research centers and extends affiliation to courses run by such institutions as Jadavpur Vidyapith College of Education and Marine Engineering and Research Institute.

The university has given affiliations to two institutes namely

• Institute of Business Management

• J D Birla Institute

The University has collaborated with World Bank Funded TEQIP which has helped to enhance the quality of Technical Education; SLYFF has helped it to grow infrastructure wise and helped to expand the services to students. The University has signed 182 MoUs which have added significantly to inter-institutional associations including foreign collaboration, facilitated student and faculty exchange; added to the university's knowledge-base, enabled national and international participation in seminars, workshops, symposia etc. led to collaborative research projects, among others.


The University caters its student with all the basic amenities required like:

• Cafeteria- There are six canteens on the main campus

• Sports Facilities- it includes playground, gymnasium, indoor and outdoor stadium, badminton court, tennis court.

Admission process for various courses begins as per the following schedule

The admissions are done through entrance test conducted by individual departments. However, for the courses that are offered by Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology, GATE score is mandatory. For those who do not have GATE, will then have to appear for the entrance test conducted by the respective departments.  At UG level, admission to the courses offered by Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology is done on the basis of WB-JEE scores, followed by counselling. Candidates opting to pursue any UG level course from Faculty Council of Arts have to appear in the entrance test conducted by different departments. For admission to courses offered by Faculty Council of Science, merit in previous qualifying exam is the sole criteria in UG as well as in PG courses.


The University offers scholarships to meritorious students, students with Physical disability and to the SC, ST candidates. Stipends are awarded on means-cum-merit basis to the needy students and one-fourth of it goes to first-year students.

Available College Facilities

The University is extremely keen on betterment of the Infrastructure tp produce a more conducive academic environment. The major developments however took place from the time period of 2008-2013. The Development in the infrastructure included:

  • Reconstruction of Gandhi Bhavan Auditorium 
  • Composite building for science departments
  • Composite building for Arts and Social Science Departments
  • Teacher's quarter

Hostel

There are 13 (4 for Girls and 9 for Boys) hostels with provision for accommodating over 1600 students. Efforts are being made for extension of the existing buildings and construction of new buildings for students accommodation. 

Hostel Mess is conducted by the Students Mess Committee under the guidance of the Superintendent of the respective hostel. The Main Hostel complex is situated outside the campus. 
At the Main Hostel complex and the Ladies Hostel complex and beside Old P.G. Hostel there are private canteens supervised by the Students Committee.

Library

The University Central Library is housed in a three-storied building on the campus. Its shelf space and working space with a total of 36,000 sq. ft. and is being extended by new construction of Annex Building 5,500 sq. ft. Seven reading rooms, carrels, and an alcove for bound volumes of journals provide sitting accommodation for approximately 700 readers. There is a separate library on the Second Campus at Salt Lake. The space of the Salt Lake campus Library is 6,500sq. ft.
