Jadavpur University, a Public University, located in the capital city of Kolkata was established in the year 1906 as the Bengal Technical Institute by the National Council of Education, Bengal. With an aim to cultivate the best of global learning and technology in order to build a self-reliant industrial base for India, the institute was converted into Jadavpur University in the year 1955. While it plays a vital role in technical education in the country, the University may be said to rest on its three pillars- Technology, Arts and Science.

The University has been accredited by NAAC with Grade A and is also has been ranked 5th in University (1st among all State Universities), 9th in Engineering and 12th in the Overall Category by the NIRF India Ranking 2017. To fulfill its mission of providing the highest standards of excellence in teaching, research, creative impression and service to the community, it offers 39 courses at the Under Graduate (UG) level, 57 courses at the Post Graduate (PG) level, 8 courses at the Diploma level and 14 courses at the Doctorate (Ph. D.) level. The courses offered in disciplines of arts, science, commerce, etc., include degrees like Bachelor of Arts (B. A.), Bachelor of Architecture (B. Jadavpur University Application Process

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FILLING-UP THE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

A candidate can apply for M. E./ M. Tech./ M. Pharm./ M. Arch. Courses online through the link given on University website. Candidates are advised to download the Information Brochure and Pay-in-Slip of the State Bank of India to deposit the Application Fee of Rs. 500/- for each course of study. The candidates are requested to keep the counterfoil of the deposit slip for future reference. Candidates are advised to carefully read the instructions before and while filling up the Online Application Form. Incomplete forms will stand cancelled.

Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination or have appeared for it or are going to appear for it, are instructed to submit all their self-attested SCANNED mark sheets and GATE/ GPAT card copies while filling their ONLINE Application Form/s and produce all Original Semester mark sheets and GATE/ GPAT Card at the time of verification of documents/ Admission Test.

Candidates are required to send the print out of the System Generated Online Application Form duly signed by them along with application part of Pay-in-slip duly received by the Bank and self attested copies of all mark sheets of the last qualifying examination and GATE Card at the following address on or before the said date by speed post:

Candidates are also requested to keep a photo copy of the Printout of the System Generated Online Application Form for future reference.
GATE qualified candidates: The list of GATE qualified candidates eligible for verification will be displayed on the University website.
GATE/ GPAT, Sponsored and Self- sponsored candidates: the list of candidates eligible for Admission Test will be made available on the University website.

All the candidates (GATE, Sponsored and Self- sponsored) are required to download their Admit Card (available on the University wensite under the Application Status Link) and also to bring their Admit Card after pasting their recent photograph along with their signature in the specified space.
If any candidate is unable to print their Admit Card through the Online System, they may contact the University Office at least 3 days before the respective date of Admission Test along with the printout of the system generated Online Application Form and the Applicant part of the Bank Pay-in-Slip.

Jadavpur University Admission Process

UG Admission

Admission to under graduate programmes in the FET is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination, conducted by an independent body, followed by the counseling process.
For admission to the under graduate programmes in the Faculty of Arts, a combination of merit (i.e. results at the +2 level) and Entrance Test are used. Departments have the autonomy to decide upon the admission criteria.
In the Faculty of Science, admission at the under graduate level is based on merit.

PG Admission

In the FET, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) results and scholarships become important for admission in addition to which the students sponsored by industry as well as self-sponsored students are admitted. For GATE applicants, the GATE score is given 70% weightage, while for the others their BE or B. Tech. scores will be given 50% weightage and the balance percentage is determined through tests, with 10% weightage being given to experience in industry for students sponsored by industry.
In the Faculty of Science, admission to post graduate programmes will be on the basis of merit (B. Sc. results) with entrance test, conducted by individual departments.
In the Faculty of Arts, the B. A. (Honours) results and admission tests conducted by individual departments determine the admission of candidates.

Available College Facilities

The University is extremely keen on betterment of the Infrastructure tp produce a more conducive academic environment. The major developments however took place from the time period of 2008-2013. The Development in the infrastructure included:

  • Reconstruction of Gandhi Bhavan Auditorium 
  • Composite building for science departments
  • Composite building for Arts and Social Science Departments
  • Teacher's quarter

Hostel

There are 13 (4 for Girls and 9 for Boys) hostels with provision for accommodating over 1600 students. Efforts are being made for extension of the existing buildings and construction of new buildings for students accommodation. 

Hostel Mess is conducted by the Students Mess Committee under the guidance of the Superintendent of the respective hostel. The Main Hostel complex is situated outside the campus. 
At the Main Hostel complex and the Ladies Hostel complex and beside Old P.G. Hostel there are private canteens supervised by the Students Committee.

Library

The University Central Library is housed in a three-storied building on the campus. Its shelf space and working space with a total of 36,000 sq. ft. and is being extended by new construction of Annex Building 5,500 sq. ft. Seven reading rooms, carrels, and an alcove for bound volumes of journals provide sitting accommodation for approximately 700 readers. There is a separate library on the Second Campus at Salt Lake. The space of the Salt Lake campus Library is 6,500sq. ft.
