The Faculty of Humanities and Languages empowers students to systematically learn languages, literature and cultures and also appreciate the diversity equally. The faculty is committed to broadening the overall understanding of its students in a way that enables them to have successful careers.

It boasts of award-winning teachers and students from diverse backgrounds and cultural geographies. Three departments in the Faculty - English, History & Culture, and Urdu - are the recipients of the prestigious SAP-DRS grant of the University Grants Commission.

The Faculty comprises the following Departments:

1. Department of Hindi: The Department, from its inception, has treated Hindi as an integrated, multifaceted and multidimensional subject. It is the first Department in the country to have included a compulsory course of Hindu Religious Studies (HRS). Many research projects are undertaken on a regular basis by both teachers and students and Ph.Ds are constantly being awarded. The faculty has taken many assignments to teach Hindi to foreigners in Hungary, Poland, Russia, Korea and elsewhere. The department offers undergraduate programmes, postgraduate programmes and doctoral programmes.

2. Department of Arabic: Being one of the oldest departments of the University, programmes included here are popular not just in India but also in the Arab and Muslim world. The focus is laid on increasing efficiency writing and speaking in Arabic. Translations and Interpretations of text are also actively done. Courses offered are undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral in nature. It also offers a certificate course.

3. Department of English: Being one of the largest departments of the University, its main strength is the bilingual competence of faculty members. Translations done by the faculty have been published by leading publishers like Oxford University Press, Penguin India etc. courses offered include undergraduate, postgraduate, masters, doctoral and certificate.

4. Department of History and Culture: One of the great strengths of Jamia’s history faculty is its familiarity with the languages in which historical source materials are found. It is one of the most sought after departments of the University. The present faculty of this department are actively engaged in studying socially and economically marginal social groups. The faculty also has a keen interest in urban social history. Courses offered by the department include undergraduate degree courses, masters courses and doctoral courses.

5. Department of Islamic Studies: It was established in 1988 and offers one undergraduate programme, one master’s programme and one PhD programme. The main focus areas are the history of Islam, socio-economic structure, military, social development, literature, mysticism and administration. Prominent scholars of Islam have been associated with this department. Some of these names are Prof. Mohd. Mujeeb, Dr S. Abid Hussaim, Prof. Ziaul Hasan Faruqi and Prof. Majid Ali Khan.

6. Department of Persian: This is one of the most reputed departments of the University. Faculty members believe in organising various activities like seminars, guest lectures and movie screenings rather than merely focusing on theoretical knowledge. Teachers and research scholars are invited from this field from various Universities throughout the India and abroad to share their views and opinions on steps that can be taken for the development of Persian language and literature in India. Infrastructural facilities of the department are appreciable. They include a seminar library with over 1,000 books, TV sets, tape recorders, CD drives etc.

7. Department of Tourism, Hotel, Hospitality and Heritage Studies: This department has been established with the help and encouragement of UGC, MHRD and Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. Admissions are based on a written test, an interview as well as a group discussion. It constitutes of undergraduate courses, a master's course, diploma course and also a certificate programme. For enhancing excellence in these courses, foreign languages are also taught. Students who have knowledge of tourism and Arabic and Persian languages are providing services to medical tourists and hospitals like Apollo, Escort and Max. Besides teaching foreign, CRS (Computerized Reservation System) training is also given to the students to enhance the importance of the course. Over the years, some students have got jobs in international travel companies and they have been posted in foreign countries.

8. Department of Urdu: Both classical and modern literature is given equal importance in teaching at this department. There are regular seminars and workshops which enable students to interact with professionals and express them. This Department on the basis of its potentials in terms of its excellence in teaching and research and consistent academic endeavour of the teaching faculty was accorded by the UGC the status of DRS-Phase-I and subsequently DRS Phase-II. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate diploma, masters, certificate and doctoral courses.

Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in 1985 with the aim to provide engineering education in the society. The Faculty is home to over 3000 students and over 200 academic, administrative and technical staff. Research programs leading to PhD are also offered by the Faculty. All courses of the Faculty are duly approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, and the medium of instruction is English for all the courses.

The Faculty has a training and placement office that is responsible for training and placement of students. Reputed multinational companies regularly visit the campus and each year a large number of the faculty’s students are placed in public and private sector companies.

There is a Faculty library that is equipped with modern e-learning tools and a large collection of text and reference books. A centralised computer laboratory with more than 100 terminals is also available to students in addition to similar laboratories available in each department.

The Faculty consists of 7 Departments which are as follows:

1. Department of Civil Engineering: This is one of the oldest and largest departments of the University. Its research projects and experimental activities receive prestigious funding under FIST from DST and SAP from UGC. Leading organisations are regular recruiters of students of the department. Courses offered are of bachelor’s, masters and doctoral level.

2. Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities: This department was established in 1996. It provides all essential analytical equipment to its students including HRSEM, Micro-Raman setup, HRFTIR, high performance chromatography unit (HPLC-UV-Perkins Elmer Series 200), atomic absorption photometer (AAS-Perkins Elmer 3100), gas chromatography unit (GC – Agilent – 7890A), spec top (UV-2450) Shimadzu make and spectrofluorometer RF – 5301 PC. Courses offered are M.Sc. Electronics and PhD Applied Sciences and Humanities.The department encourages research projects and hence, possesses most of the required research facilities.

3. Department of Computer Engineering: The Department of Computer Engineering is a member of the Computer Society of India. The faculty has been constantly working for good placements of its students and topmost companies like HP, HCL, TCS, Accenture and BirlaSoft visit the department to fulfil placement requirements. Laboratories meet current technology trends it has the main computing lab, a Solaris lab and also an advanced lab. Courses offered by the department are of the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level.

4. Department of Electrical Engineering: This department is one of the premier electrical engineering education and research departments of the country and is also one of the SAP departments of UGC. It offers undergraduate programmes, master's programmes and a doctoral programme. The faculty members of the department are highly motivated to achieve excellence in research and publish their research in international journals, patenting their research findings, and bringing generous research grants from govt. research funding agencies like AICTE, MHRD, MNRE, UGC, DRDO, DST, DOE etc. to upgrade the research facilities at the department and to provide innovative solutions to engineering problems. Many faculty members have received prestigious national and international awards for their contributions. Employment is easily found by graduate and postgraduate students in leading government, public or private organisations after the successful completion of their respective courses.

5. Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering: The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was set up in 1996 and approved by AICTE with the aim of meeting the growing need for engineers all over the world. The department’s mission is to practice professionalism and disseminate high standards of teaching with the support of its excellent curriculum. Department laboratories are many, such as VLSI lab, Digital image processing lab, Circuit simulation lab, Instrumentation & Sensor lab and also a Communication lab and all of these are well-equipped with the latest technology. The Department provides access to high-end software like QUAL NET, PSPICE-16.3, Xilinx, TCAD, ANSYS HFSS, Cadence Suite and MATLAB. After the successful completion of these respective programs, the department attracts companies like TCIL, HCL, TCS, Perot Systems and much more for campus recruitment.

6. Department of Mechanical Engineering: To enhance the understanding and application of mechanical engineering principles in the students is the main purpose of the department. The faculty firmly believes that this will help improve the quality of life of the citizens. The technical exposure of the student is increased which enables better job placements. Students from diverse backgrounds give entrance tests and are then shortlisted after interviews.

7. University Polytechnic: Started in 1957 a Civil and Rural Institute, now named as Jamia Polytechnic is one of the oldest departments of Jamia Millia Islamia operative under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University. It is conducting Diploma Engineering courses of 3 years duration. the University Polytechnic is aiming at an overall development of the personality of the students by giving adequate attention to co-curricular extra-curricular activities through the departmental Subject Association and other national professional bodies. The Faculty of Fine Arts was established in the year  1951 as an Art Institute by Abul Kalam who laid its foundation at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. In 1967 the Arts Institute became the Department of Art and Craft Education and a part of the Teacher's Training College, and subsequent to this, in 1980-81 it was granted the status of Department of Fine Arts and Art Education and professional courses (BFA) in Painting, Applied Art, and Sculpture was started. Later, B.A (Hons.) course in Art and Art Education was modified to B.F.A in Art Education to provide a comprehensive degree program for art teachers.

On December 3rd, 2007 it was declared as Faculty of Fine Arts. Today, the Faculty has a vibrant culture that fosters practice, research and scholarship. The Department also offers the country's first and only Master's degree in Art Education.

At present it comprises following departments:

1. Department of Applied Art: Applied Art is considered as an effective tool for visual publicity. It plays an important role in planning, designing and advertising of goods and services and is one of the most important tools of mass communication. The department’s syllabus is designed in a way that it grooms students to attain expert knowledge and training as designers in the field of advertising. The aim is to achieve international standards of excellence in graduate and postgraduate educations of future artists by encouraging individual creativity among all students.

2. Department of Painting: The Department of Painting was started in 2007 and is approved by the HRD Ministry, Government of India, University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Executive Council and Academic Council of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Fine arts education is essential as it provides students with opportunities to acquire basic skills in kinesthetic, musical, spatial and visual intelligence which are all ultimately applicable to learning in all other subject areas. Keeping this view in mind, the department offers one undergraduate course and one master’s course in fine arts (BFA and MFA). The new semester system based on credits/grades in the department is to make the course compatible with the same subjects being conducted at other Universities and Institutes in India and abroad.

3. Department of Sculpture: The department of sculpture encourages balanced expression, imaginative problem solving and aesthetic understanding within and outside of a studio environment. Courses provide degrees of the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Certificate nature.

4. Department of Art Education: The foundation of this department was laid by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in 1951. Today, it focuses on liberal training in visual art. Courses are focused on discovering creativity and enhancing understanding of the various aspects of art. Courses offered by the department are of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level.

5. Department of Art History and Art Appreciation: The Department of Art History and Art Appreciation provides diverse programs for the study of history and theory of art. This is a department with a vision to enhance the level of scholastic studies in the field. It is the only department in Delhi which offers an MFA in Art History. After doing this course students can work as art writers, art critics, contemporary curators, art consultants, gallery managers, and art historians in academies and art educators in different colleges/faculties.

6. Department of Graphic Art: The department of graphic art focuses on the study of graphic techniques in art and believes in giving freedom to students for honing their artistic opinions. Individual initiatives and experiments are encouraged. The primary focus of the department is to enhance visual communication skills.

Teachers’ Training Institute, established in 1938 under the leadership of Dr Zakir Husain, initiated the Teacher Education Programme for Art and Craft Teachers and in Art Education. It also organised post graduate course in Education as well as research in Education.

With the introduction of Faculty Structure in Jamia Millia Islamia in 1980, the erstwhile Teachers’ College was renamed as the Faculty of Education. Both students and teachers are involved in research in different areas. Also, the Faculty through the IASE has been providing training programme to in-service teachers at different levels. 

It has the following two departments:

1. Department of Educational Studies: The Department of Educational Studies has been making constant efforts to provide education compatible with national and international standards and needs. The main thrust areas of research are teacher education, educational management and administration, psychology of education, cognition and learning, mental health, gender education, ICT and language education. The Department provides a variety of courses and curriculum is revised regularly. The department has a platform in the form of Post Graduate Educational Association (PGEA) that organises inter-departmental competitions, workshops etc. for the students. It has a well- equipped computer lab and departmental library for the faculty and students.

2. Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (Institute of Advanced Studies in Education): The Department of Teacher Training & Non-Formal Education was established in 1938 under Dr Zakir Husain. This Teacher Training Institute was one of the first of its kind in the country to have started training of teachers for Basic schools which were offering crafts-centred indigenous education to children. The Institute aims at imparting pre-service and in-service education to the secondary/special education/elementary/nursery school teachers and developing and publishing for the dissemination of useful material for teachers and teacher-educators.

The Faculty of Social Sciences was founded in 1976 and is one of the largest faculties of the University. Besides courses offered by different departments, the faculty also manages Bachelor Programme and a course in Library and Information Science (B.Lib & Info Sc). The departments of the faculty are:

1. Department of Economics: A well-recognised and one of the oldest ones in the University, the Department of Economics offers courses that are of bachelors, masters and doctoral levels.

2. Department of Political Science: The Department of Political Science was established in 1977. Other than offering one undergraduate course, three postgraduate courses and one PhD course, the department hosts seminars, panel discussions, workshops, extension lectures and study tours for its students. It has a vibrant students association and a well-stocked library. The department has recruited men and women of distinction in various spheres of specialisation in political science. Research is the backbone of the department and it has more than 60 students and faculty members enrolled in research projects. 

3. Department of Psychology: Including the most sought after courses at JMI, this department attracts students from all over the country and abroad. Students are offered theory, science, and practice, resulting in graduates who have the knowledge, skills, and values to be effective agents of change in the society. They are placed in different hospitals and organisations during summer vacations to get the real understanding of their role as psychologists. Besides field and lab training, students also undertake a project/dissertation on contemporary issues in organisations, social, clinical, health, and counselling. 

4. Department of Sociology: The Department of Sociology is committed to teaching its students at the undergraduate and graduate levels the basic grammar of social science within the context of a general awareness of diverse national and international social realities and issues, building a foundation of intellectual skills for independent research useful for varied professions, including extracurricular learning, using mother tongue and acquire bilingual reading and writing habits and encouraging teaching faculty to research and enrich their knowledge and practice. Courses offered are of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. 

5. Department of Social Work: The Department of Social Work established in 1967 and is well known for its teaching and instructional programme as well as innovative field action projects. Members of the faculty also serve on various committees for the formulation, monitoring and implementation of development initiatives, both in the government and the NGO sector. The Department has an excellent infrastructure in terms of smart classrooms, conference room, a library, a computer and data processing lab and an advanced behavioural and personality enrichment laboratory. The department hosts various programmes which have some unique components to develop fully rounded professionals. Some of the most appreciable ones include a compulsory Rural Camp of 10 days, skill laboratory training for micro skill development, a self-development and management programme for the development of managerial skills and group conferences to enhance the presentation skills of students. Research and field action projects have been the backbone of the department. 

6. Department of Commerce & Business Studies: This department regularly organises co-curricular events that enhance one’s personality. The syllabus is regularly updated as per changes in demands and expectations of the market. Students participate in activities like survey-based field work, industry interactions, extensive projects and presentations. Courses offered by the department are of bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. 

7. Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extension: Besides awareness generating programs, this department has been organising skill and knowledge based courses for unemployed/ underemployed and out of school youth. It regularly organises a number of courses, street plays, puppet shows etc. in the slums, urbanised villages and communities around JMI for women, adolescent girls and youth.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences was established in the year 1984 with four Departments. Three more were added after that and now the Faculty consists of seven Departments. Through its various departments, undergraduate, post-graduate and PG Diploma courses are offered by the Faculty along with the PhD Programmes in every sphere of Science subjects.

The Faculty consists of the following departments:

1. Department of Biotechnology: One of the courses of the department, M.Sc. Biotechnology is among the top 10 Biotech courses of the country according to an All India Survey. Faculty members have published over 100 research papers. Courses are at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. 

2.  Department of Mathematics: The Department successfully keeps up with the high-end requirements of the industry and focuses on the professional development of its students. Courses offered by the department are PhD (Mathematics), M.A./M.Sc. (Mathematics) (Self-financed, Evening), M.Sc.Tech. (Industrial Mathematics with Computer Application) (S.F.), M.Sc. 3. Department of Geography: The ISRO, Government of India not only recognised this department as one of the leading centres for teaching Remote Sensing/Geographic Information System but also funded the enhancement of the GIS labs to promote applications of these techniques. The main areas of the department are Regional Development, Urban Geography, Environmental Studies, Agricultural Geography, Population Geography, Gender Geography, Social Geography, Transport Geography and Urban Environment. 

4. Department of Biosciences: This department incorporates Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics on equal footing with modern and classical Biosciences. In addition to well-equipped teaching and research laboratories, the department also maintains a Green House facility. Courses offered by the department are undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral in nature. 

5. Department of Computer Science: The Department, in order to cater to the requirements of interdisciplinary courses, invites guest teachers from institutes such as IIT Delhi, AIIMS, National Institute of Immunology, Jamia Hamdard University etc. The Department has computing labs, seminar room, a departmental library and four classrooms. It also has a Research Laboratory for research scholars in the Department. The whole Department is connected through a LAN in order to provide modern teaching and learning environment and fast access to the Internet. 

6. Department of Physics: The Department of Physics as an independent department was created in 1971. Over the year faculty members of the Department have been actively involved in research and completed a number of research projects funded by various agencies and produced more than 60 Ph.Ds, besides a large number of research papers in international journals and some textbooks which are used internationally. 

7. Department of Chemistry: Regular seminars are organised where distinguished scholars and scientists are invited to talk to the students. Research focus is on organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and material chemistry. The Department of Chemistry comprises the following courses: PhD (Chemistry), M.Sc. (Chemistry: Materials /Inorganic /Organic /Physical Chemistry), B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry.

Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia

The Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies (SNCWS), JMI was established in September 2000 and is one of the oldest Centres in JMI. The focus of the Centre is multidisciplinary in nature. The Centre takes the responsibility of influencing all disciplines to include feminist perspectives in their curricula and gradually help empower women all around the country.

Recognised and guided by UGC, Women's Studies is a discipline in the UGC’s list of disciplines for the NET and JRF programmes. It regularly revises its curriculum material, encourages research studies and even works on documentation activities.

The Centre’s main aim is to promote a sense of gender equality among the academic community which will lead to an attitudinal change of the youth students. It has been working towards its aim via two-way knowledge sharing, workshops, radio programmes and promotion of self-help groups.

The Centre for Early Childhood Development and Research (CECDR) was established at Jamia Millia Islamia in February 2010 as a unique collaboration between Jamia Millia Islamia and Save the Children, India. The Centre has been identified as a partner by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and NIPCCD to develop curriculum of the world’s largest integrated early childhood programme—ICDS.

Its vision is to bridge the existing gap between theory, practice and policy formulation in India. The Centre aims to identify concerns in the field of Early Childhood Development (ECD) and undertake research, advocacy and capacity building as means of improving the situation. It is actively engaged in research in the field of Early Childhood Development and has a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) which comprises prominent experts in the field of research.

The Centre for Theoretical Physics is a research centre of Jamia Milia Islamia which was established in 2006. It is one of the top-most research centres in the country and the only centre in Delhi which is dedicated to research in theoretical physics. It bagged the Visitor’s Award for ‘Best Research’ for the year 2015.

The aim of the University is to provide research facilities to individuals or research groups and motivate them to come up with new ideas and research findings. The Centre's activities are mainly in the areas of astrophysics, gravitation, cosmology and high energy physics.

A number of workshops and seminars are regularly organised by the Centre. One of the important activities of Centre for Theoretical Physics is its Public Outreach Program. The goal of this programme is to organise lectures and activities that reach a wide audience.

The centre offers essential ICT services including Internet Access, Emailing, Jamia MIS, IT security, WiFi, University Portal development and maintenance, Problem diagnostics and troubleshooting etc. through a network comprising of approximately 7000+ nodes. All ICT services offered by the centre remain operational on 24x7 across the University.

In the World Education Summit (2011), Jamia Millia Islamia got the Best Jury Award for the “Best ICT Enabled Institution of Higher Learning” for the ‘File Tracking System’ utility developed by the FTK-Centre for Information Technology.

Research on communication is closely linked to questions of public policy and the state, of economic and technological expansion, and more broadly to social and cultural issues.

The Centre identifies three interlocking areas identified for Basic and Applied research: It recognises the presence and influence of media interpretation of political events and other issues and how it acts as a Fourth Estate in the country.

The reason behind the idea of this Centre was the acknowledgement of concerns of Dalits and Minorities in the larger interests of the Nation-building processes in the country. Recognising Dr K. R. The Centre encourages academic debates and discussions among students. Concepts like Human Rights, Social Development, Distributive Democracy and Protective Discrimination are brought up and widely discussed.

The academic council approved the proposal to establish Centre for Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Sciences in Jamia Millia Islamia in 2005 which was subsequently, approved by UGC under Xth plan in May 2006. The AJK Mass Communication Research Centre was founded in 1982 by Anwar Jamal Kidwai (former VC of Jamia Millia Islamia and later, Chairman of the Centre). A.J. Kidwai established the MCRC in collaboration with York University, Toronto and the Canadian International Development Aid Agency. It aims to mould and encourage thoughtful and competent media professionals who contribute and influence the society in the right direction.

The Centre offers graduate and post-graduate courses in the art, craft and technology of the modern media. The Centre receives generous grants from the government and other international agencies like Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

This Centre of the University is also one of the pioneer institutions in North India to receive a license from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to run a Campus Community Radio. Radio Jamia 90.4 FM began its live transmission in 2005.

Jamia Milia Islamia's infrastructure is good and has been accredited with 'A' grade by NAAC. The students are ensured with various facilities of Hostel, Canteen, Classrooms, laboratories, Internet and Projectors. The classrooms are highly maintained to ensure better teaching and projectors are used where the teaching and learning process is made easy through e-learning. The University's Zakir Hussain library is one of the biggest ones in the Country. There are separate Hostel Buildings for girls and boys.There is also the availability of a Mess or Canteen and the University is located in a well-connected area of the city, having various eating hubs around. Jamia has now completed 96 years of its academic life and sports and Games definitely claim a fair share in the progress of the institution.

The University has separate Hostels for boys and girls. The boys' hostel is known as M.M.A. Jauhar Hall or Dr Zakir Hussain Hall. The girls' hostel, on the other hand, is known as Mridula Sarabhai Working Women's' Hostel.

Sports

Ranji Trophy matches are a regular event every year at the Jamia Cricket ground. The University has also hosted Women's Cricket Test matches, Women World Cup matches and Blinds Cricket World Cup matches in the past. The sports complex of the University is called the Bhopal Ground. It consists of a Centrally Air-Conditioned Indoor Games Stadium along with a Viewers Gallery meeting all the International standards.

Established in 1920, this library is known as the Dr Zakir Hussain Library and was named former President of India and Jamia's former Vice-Chancellor in 1973.
