More about Kuvempu University

Kuvempu University is a Public University situated in the town of Shimoga, Karnataka, India. Kuvempu University was established in 1987 by the Karnataka State Legislature Act under the Karnataka State University Act 1976. The university has its headquarters at Jnana Sahyadri Campus, Shimoga. The campus is spread over an area of 230 acres, providing the right ambience for higher education by being a pollution free campus. It was recognized by the UGC in 1994 and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

The University has two campuses: The Post-Graduate Centre in Kadur is located near Shivamogga-Bengaluru highway and 7 km away from Kadur town. The objective of Kadur campus is to provide higher education to rural youth. The campus offers four courses M.Com, M.A. Economics, M.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry. It also has separate hostels for boys and girls.
Another campus is The Post-Graduate Centre in Chikkamagaluru. It offers four courses M.Com, M.A. Kannada, M.A. Political Science and M.Sc. Mathematics.

The department of studies offers courses in the fields of English, Political Science, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, MSW, Economics, Sociology, English Language Teaching, Journalism, and Mass Communication. The University has 59 post-graduate departments of studies in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, and Law offering 45 Postgraduate (PG) programs, 4 PG diplomas(regular) and 1 Undergraduate program.

The students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, and whose annual family income is less than 2, 50,000 are free from the payment of tuition fee, laboratory fees, and other administration fees as per the Government Order.

Besides the purchase of application by sending the fees in SBI, Jnanasahyadri and producing the challan, the application form can also be downloaded from the university website.

The university conducts an entrance test for admission to MSW, M.L.I.Sc. (Master of Library and Information Science), M.A. (Journalism and Mass Communication), M.P.Ed and B.P.Ed.

Admission to MBA and MCA courses is through Common Entrance Test conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority.

However, Kuvempu University conducts a separate entrance test to fill up the unfilled seats in these departments. If the candidates wish to be considered for admission in the unfilled seats, they shall contact the chairperson of the concerned Department and submit separate applications to the Department.

For the Post-Graduate courses of Kuvempu University and affiliated colleges, admission is done through counselling.

The Eligibility for Post-Graduate Courses is that a candidate needs to have a minimum percentage of marks in the relevant subjects (all the 3 years/4 years put together) shall be as follows:

(a) For candidates under General Merit, Children of Freedom Fighters, Children/ Dependents of Defence Personnel, Categories - IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, NCC, and NSS.  However, the minimum percentage of marks required for admission to M.A in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu is 40%.

 (b) For candidates belonging to Category - I, Sports and Persons with Disability (PWD) 40%

 (c) For candidates belonging to SC and ST categories 35%.

Kuvempu University offers various courses at the Undergraduate level. The basic eligibility is to have passed 10+2 or equivalent exam in the relevant subjects. To apply, candidates can get the application forms from the university’s website. Candidates can fill and submit the applications online.

In addition, the University also offers Postgraduate programmes. To apply, Candidate can register through the online application process.

In the year 2003 - 04, Kuvempu University had started Five Year Integrated Course in selected courses. These Courses offer candidates the advantage of combining the undergraduate degree and Post Graduate Course for an in-depth study and obtaining and Integrated course degree.

The course that has been started with Integrated degree in Applied Chemistry - Sahyadri Science College, Shimoga.

The Admission Criteria for this course is:

The students after 10+2 will be eligible to join the Five Year Integrated course. The students who desire to join the course in Physics or Chemistry should have studied the same subjects in 10+2.

The university follows semester system for all its courses viz. Odd and Even semester. End semester examinations are generally conducted in December/ January for an odd semester and in the month of May/ June for even semesters. Results for the same are usually uploaded on the official university website within a month from the examinations.

Hostel

There are four hostels for the post-graduate students on the main campus - two men’s hostels and two women’s hostels. Also, there is a working women’s hostel on the campus providing accommodation to students. 

 
Laboratory

The Language laboratory in the campus has been made to train the students in English for communication.

Sports

The University has a well-equipped Indoor Sports Complex in which students can play volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and modern multi gymnasium. 

 
Extra - Curricular

National Service Scheme (NSS): The Kuvempu University NSS wing is acknowledged as one of the best in Karnataka State and has also received Indira Gandhi NSS National Award for 2014-15. The NSS wing organizes annual camps, national camps, and socially relevant programmes. The outstanding performer in NSS activities is given the Gold medal Aniketana by the University. 

SC/ST and OBC Cells: The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and OBC Cells have been recognized to provide special assistance to students. The cells monitor scholarships and fellowships to SC, ST, and OBC researchers and P. G students. They also organize remedial classes and coaching classes for the competitive examinations.

International Students Cell: In order to facilitate the students from overseas in pursuing higher education, International Students Centre has been established. 

Women’s Study Centre: A Women’s Study Centre is empowered to assist women students in the campus, offer counseling programmes, conduct vocational training programmes for rural women in the campus through bringing in gender sensitivity and equality. 

Health Centre: The university has a health center with physicians assisted by necessary staff. 

Disability Centre: To assist the physical or psychological disabilities a separate center is established. 

Cafeteria and Bank: There is a well-furnished canteen in the campus. There is also a branch of State Bank of India in the campus.

Library

The library provides students with traditional print sources such as books, reference sources, journals, magazines, reports. Also, provides access to online resources such as e-journals, e-database, and e-portals. The library has access to more than 15000 e-resources. In addition, there is a Green Library in which Wifi is enabled in the library where students can browse hundreds of books and journals.
