More about Mangalore University

Mangalore University was set up in 1980 at Mangalagangothri, Karnataka. The university had started as a post-graduate centre of the University of Mysore. It was established to provide for the higher educational needs of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu Districts. The university campus sprawls over an area of 333 acres. It has been accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC.

Mangalore University has received grants from the Government of Karnataka, UGC, DST, Department of Ocean Development, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Electronics, Department of Space, Department of Atomic Energy and other such nodal agencies which have helped the university attain national and international visibility. The university has established associations with other international universities such as in UK, USA, Finland, Germany, Spain, etc. through the exchange of scholars and students. Also, Mangalore University has internationally renowned national research centres like the Microtron, Centre for Application of Radioisotope and Radiation Technology (CARRT), Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER), Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell (OASTC).

The university has 26 Departments conducting 37 postgraduate programmes, 29 Ph D. programmes and various certificate programmes in the field of arts, commerce, science, law and management. It has more than 210 affiliated colleges. The faculties and departments are as follows:

Students seeking admission can apply at the University Campus, Mangalagangothri/ University College, Mangalore / F.M.K.M.C. College, Madikeri and have to submit their application to the Chairperson / Co-ordinator of the respective department of studies at Mangalagangothri – 574199. The university offers scholarships to the meritorious students and to others as well.

The university campus provides facilities such as the Microtron Centre, the Humanities Block, the University Science Instrumentation Centre, cyber café, guest house, hostels, computer centre, shopping complex, banks, ATM, health centre, library, post office, playgrounds and courts, a modern gymnasium, and indoor sports facilities, etc. Additionally, there is an IAS/IPS coaching centre especially for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe and other backward class students, which has been started with the support from the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Hostel

There is a separate hostel facility for men and women.  

There a Day Care Centre facility for children of around two years to six years of age for University employees/students, to help women and working parents to pursue their academic career.

Sports

In the University system, sports play an important role in the development of integrated personality of the youth. Sports and Physical activities are an essential part of human resources development. These help to develop health, spirit of friendly competition, achievement, national pride and patriotism. With a view to realize and fulfil this great task, University has been organizing Inter Collegiate Tournaments since its inception in 1980. 

Department has been conducting University Campus sports activities, Inter Collegiate tournaments and Inter University Sports competitions every year.

 

Library

The Mangalore University Library was established in 1980 and was moved to a separate building in 1993 having 9000sq. meters area. 

Th library stocks around 2,05,320 books, 23,085 back volumes apart from Reports, Theses etc. It has a rich collection of about 293 research and general interest journals on a wide range of subjects. It has access to over 8500+ Journals in Full text in e-form from 25 UGC-INFONET databases and 45000+ Journals full text information from J-Gate database.

Health Centre

The Health Centre of Mangalore University was set up in 1980. The centre caters to the regular and emergency treatment to the patients. A Laboratory has been set up in the Health Centre where tests are conducted.

Canteen

The university has centrally located canteen on the campus.
