National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a Public University located in Delhi, the National Capital Region of India. Established in the year 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, it is a Statutory Institute governed by the NIFT Act 2006. NIFT is a leader in fashion education with the ability to integrate knowledge, academic freedom, critical independence & creative thinking and has a history of 28 years of its existence that stand as a testimony to its fundamentals where academic excellence lies at the core. NIFT is also the first premier institute in India to award its own Degrees in the field of Fashion Education.

NIFT has spread itself across the length and breadth of the country wherein it now has 15 professionally managed campuses that offer all kinds of programmes in the field of Fashion Education in the domains of Design, Management and Technology, at the Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and Doctorate (Ph. NIFT offers courses in the field of Fashion Education at the Under Graduate level. The details of all the courses offered have been given below.

Bachelor of Design (Fashion Design)

Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) in the field of Fashion Design focuses on the students’ approach towards apparel and inculcates the ability to develop and channelize creativity. The curriculum hones design sensitization, which balances global fashion aesthetics with the Indian soul. It addresses the needs of the export market as well as both couture and prêt a porter clothing in India, expanding and categorizing apparel design into niche segments. In tandem with the shifts in the industry where Design has become even more significant, the students are trained to anticipate and address relevant concerns and issues. A logical, sequential, hands-on experience enables students to conceptualize designs, make patterns, drape and construct garments of impeccable quality.

Bachelor of Design (Leather Design)

Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) in the field of Leather Design caters to the requirements of the Leather industry in terms of both goods and apparel. The programme offered by the Department of Fashion & Apparel lays emphasis on the integration of design concepts in leather apparel and products with material knowledge to respond to the requirements of specific target markets.  Exposure to the industry through field trips, tannery training and industry internship is an important part of the curriculum. The multidisciplinary approach including inputs ranging from market research, material and technical knowledge for product development develops an ability in students to handle different material for different types of products in leather.

Bachelor of Design (Accessory Design)

Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) is a one of its kind programme in the country which has a well-defined curriculum for developing integrated expertise in design methodology, material and production process, consumer behavior and market dynamics trends and forecast interpretations, business practices and project management in the field of fashion and lifestyle accessories. The programme has gradually evolved and now covers the entire spectrum of accessories and lifestyle products, precious and costume jewellery, leather goods, footwear, watches, giftware, tableware, silverware, crystal ware/ office furniture, consumer interface design and retail environment design.

Bachelor of Design (Textile Design)

Textile Design forms the basis of the whole business of fashion. The rapidly expanding activities in the export and domestic sectors of the Indian apparel and home fashion industry demands professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw material, which is responsible for 60-80% of the cost of the product. Textile design today is that strategic value adding activity that can make all the difference in transforming a fashion business into an economically viable and profitable proposition.

Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) in Textile Design is a specialisation offered by the Department of Fashion & Textiles that equips students with a broad-spectrum education in textiles while developing creativity, originality and design application in the apparel and home fashion industries.

Bachelor of Design (Knitwear Design)

Knitwear Design is emerging as a growing area in the industry. B. Des. In Knitwear Design is a programme that has been structured keeping in view the future requirements of the Indian knitting industry. Students get an opportunity to work on state-of-the-art equipment like computerized flat bed knitting machines such as Shima Seiki and Stoll. They are also exposed to the techniques and variations in the circular and flat knitting manufacturing techniques, possible structure developments, processing and garmenting.

Bachelor of Design (Fashion Communication)

Fashion Communication is one of the newest and most exciting avenues to explore in the field of fashion and lifestyle industry. With the multitude of domestic and international brands, companies and designers exploding into the Indian retail scenario, it has become essential for each of them to develop a unique brand identity, and maximize its visibility. This is a task done by the fashion communication professionals, who excel in extending the design strategy beyond the domain of the product, to include all aspects of communication design.

The Fashion Communication programme encompasses areas such as visual merchandising, exhibition & display design, graphic design, fashion journalism, styling, photography, advertising and public relations, specific to the fashion and lifestyle industry. Therefore, at the exit level, Communication Design students emerge as dynamic professionals equipped with an intensive skill, knowledge and concept base, fully qualified to offer the most effective and financially viable communication solutions for the fashion and lifestyle industry.

Internships, Diploma Projects, Industry Projects, Juries, Integrated Term Projects, Guest Faculty, Eminent Speakers, and Placements are a few of the avenues through which students get to interact with the industry.

Bachelor of Fashion Technology (Apparel Production)

The four year B. F. Tech. programme is designed to train students in the core garment manufacturing technology. With emphasis on the best practices in Apparel Production coupled with understanding and application of Information Technology, the programme prepares professionals who are capable of significantly contributing to the fashion technology domain of the industry.
The Bachelor’s programme imparts practical knowledge pertaining to the apparel manufacturing technology. The students learn about equipment and processes through hands-on training in laboratories, classroom sessions and industry exposure. The information technology input helps students to appreciate, evaluate and apply computer application and information technology in apparel production. Through four years of intensive learning, the students are prepared to play the role of change agents in the industry.

Master of Design (M. Des.)

The objective of ‘Design Space’ is to create a new avenue for professionals for higher education. The M. Des. Programme will have students who are able to work beyond boundaries and bring together their skills and ideas in new and exciting ways in the fashion industry. Students would draw from each other’s diverse professional background and provide a critical approach to the solution of future problems; as well as provide design innovations and inventions for the growing fashion industry. The multidisciplinary programme of design would encourage design thinking and would give a wider perspective and a broader perception to the thoughts and ideas of tomorrow. The programme will provide an opportunity to choose design specializations for research as major and minor subject areas. A research environment provided here would give a much-needed platform for answering questions.

Foreign Direct Investment has opened all boundaries and it is now our topmost agenda to capture it all. More and more industry professionals are required to hold key positions at higher levels. Keeping in mind the requirements of tomorrow, a master programme is designed for the growing fashion space.

Master of Fashion Management (M. F. M.)

The two- year Master of Fashion Management programme was started in the year 1987 was started in with the objective of developing managerial talents in the field of fashion marketing, merchandising and retailing, best suited to the requirements of the garment export and fashion retail sectors. Students undergo a rigorous education process in buying, merchandising (retail and export), retail operations, advertising, forecasting, international marketing, international trade practices and project formulation. They are exposed to creative merchandising/ marketing, innovative fashion management practices, direction of fashion trends and business practices through field visits and industry internships. They have the right blend of hard & soft skills and possess the right attitude to enter the middle management of any growing organization.

Master of Fashion Technology (M. F. Tech.)

Apparel manufacturing industry has played a significant role in the Indian economy. The industry is predicted to grow substantially on exports as well as on the domestic market front. In view of this, there is a growing need for Fashion Technologists who can implement the latest technology solutions, man advanced equipment and practice modern systems in a team work environment. The definitive trend towards consolidation and creation of larger manufacturing facilities will require techno-managers to lead the enterprises towards the strategic goal.

The two year master programme in Fashion Technology is designed to impart professional knowledge pertaining to garment manufacturing technology. The programme is designed to motivate and facilitate students to strive to excel in understanding and integrating the areas of technology and management for apparel manufacturing and develop capability to offer ‘strategic solutions’. The programme inculcates in the students the ability to create a synergy between Modern Technology and Human Element. In a measured combination of theory, practical, and applied research, the programme aims at developing a truly global trade oriented perspective for its students.

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Application Process

NIFT provides for a very easy and hassle free ONLINE process of applying to any of the courses offered by the University. Aspirants can apply online on the University website at . The Prospectus is available online free of cost and the Application Fee to be paid along with the Application form has to be paid through online gateway or through Bank Draft issued in favour of “NIFT HO” payable at New Delhi.

Application fee payable is divided into two categories:

Fee for General/ OBC (Non- Creamy) Category: Rs. 1500/- through payment gateway or Demand Draft

Fee for SC/ ST/ PHP Category: Rs. 750/- payable through payment gateway or Demand Draft

Applicants are advised to keep a print out or photocopy of the Application form for further reference along with the proof of payment. On the basis of information provided by the candidates in the NIFT Application form, Admit Cards of provisionally eligible candidates will be available for download on the University website and will NOT be sent by post.

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Admission Process

Candidates aspiring to apply for any of the under graduate or post graduate courses provided by the University are required to fulfill the eligibility criteria of that course. The eligibility criteria of all the courses provided by the University have been given below.

Eligibility for Bachelor Programmes – Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) in Fashion Design/ Leather Design/ Accessory Design/ Textile Design/ Knitwear Design/ Fashion Communication

  • Candidates should have cleared their 10+2 examination from any of the recognized Central/ State Board of Secondary Education, such as CBSE, State Board New Delhi or the Council for Indian School of Certificate Examination, New Delhi. For B. F. Tech. programme, such examination needs to be cleared with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects, OR
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/ Cambridge/ Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for B. F. Tech.)/ International Baccalaureate (IB), OR
  • Any Public School/ Board/ University Examination in India or any foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system. For B. F. Tech. programme, such examination needs to be passed with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects, OR
  • A pass grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects. For B. F. Tech. programme, such examination needs to be cleared with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects, OR
  • 3 or 4 years of diploma recognized by the AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education

Eligibility Criteria for Masters Programmes

Master of Design (M. Des.)

  • Under graduate Degree from any Institute/ University recognized by law in India, OR
  • Diploma in UG Design from NIFT/ NID only.
  • Under graduate Diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT/ NID.

Master of Fashion Management (M. F. M.)

  • Under graduate Degree from any Institute/ University recognized by law in India, OR
  • Under graduate Diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT/ NID.

Master of Fashion Technology (M. F. Tech.)

  • B. F. Tech. from NIFT, OR
  • B. E./ B. Tech. from any Institute/ University recognized by law in India.

Other instructions regarding admission:

Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply provided they produce a proof of having acquired the minimum prescribed qualifications at the time of counselling/ admission.

The National Institute of Fashion Technology is an academic institute of design, management, and technology which aims at the quality of professionalism in the fashion industry. The Institute provides art infrastructure and equipment for both practical and theoretical training.
