More about Panjab University

Panjab University (PU) is one of the oldest universities in India, located at Chandigarh. Originally, it was established at Lahore (now in Pakistan) in 1882, but was reassembled and developed at its present campus at Chandigarh in 1956. It was set up under the Panjab University Act VII of 1947, enacted by the Government of India. PU is a public university, approved by UGC and accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC. The present campus sprawls over an area of 550 acres. UGC has recognized the University as the “University with Potential for Excellence in Biomedical Sciences” with facilities for Stem Cell Research and Drug Development.

The University has bagged many awards and acclamation such as follows:

• It has been ranked 1st among Universities of India and 38th in Asia, according to Times Higher Education Asian University rankings 2015

• Ranked 39th by the Times Higher Education among BRICS & Emerging Economies.

• PU has received the 8th rank in the MHRD initiated ‘National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)’ amongst all the Universities of the country; and 12th amongst all the Universities/educational institutions of the country. The rankings were released for the Higher Education Institutions by Union Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

• The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) have adjudged the university as the ‘Best University Campus’ in India.

Panjab University has signed Memorandum of Understanding with various national and international universities and institutions that consist of: University of Western Sydney (Australia), University of Nottingham (UK), Nottingham Trent University (UK); The Foundation Le Corbusier Paris France; Julius Maximilian University of Wurzburg; National Institute of IST, Japan, Fayetteville State University, USA. PU has collaborations with National Science Technology and Development Agency, Thailand; Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal; International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad; International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA), Morocco for a joint collaborative project funded by the Consultative group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) consortium, funded by organisations such as UNDP and FAO, USA, UK, and Germany.

Other Association/Collaboration with national institutions include:  Indian Agricultural Research Institute; Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla; IIT, Roorkee; Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), New Delhi; Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India, Mumbai, etc. It is also noteworthy that the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has selected Panjab University as one among the top fourteen universities of India for further funding under the Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (DST-PURSE) programme; under the scheme  PU will be given an amount of Rs 38.8 crore for the development of research infrastructure, to be utilized in the period from 2014 - 2018.

Panjab University has about 78 teaching and research departments and 15 Centers/Chairs for teaching and research at the main campus. There are 193 affiliated and 6 constituent colleges spread over Punjab and Chandigarh. The University School of Open Learning provides higher education to over 22,000 distance learners offering 23 courses.

Students seeking admission need to select courses offered by Teaching Departments and Regional Centres of Panjab University and fill online Admission Form. The university considers CBSE (JEE) Mains and CAT scores for the engineering and MBA programmes, respectively. Departments may conduct a test as part of admission process.


The Wi-Fi enabled campus of Panjab University provides various academic, administrative, sports/recreational, residential facilities to cater to the need of the students and faculty members. The campus has Bank, Post Office, Shopping Centre, Sports Grounds, Botanical Gardens, Swimming Pool, Gymnasium, Open Air Theatre, Guest Houses, Faculty House, Alumni House, Community Centre, 8 hostels for boys, 9 hostels for girls, 1 Working Women Hostel, 1 International Hostel and 2 Sports hostels. PU has its own Community Radio Station called Jyotirgamaya: 91.2MHz. Additionally, there is a Central Placement Cell which performs the association work with the corporates to provide campus placement to students.

Panjab University has many landmark structures such as the Gandhi Bhawan, Student Centre, Student council and the fine arts museum. It boasts of a huge air conditioned computerised library with around 6,40,000 publications. There are 17 hostels and many buildings are designed by the celebrated architect Pierre Jeanneret. The student centre holds many student councils that is the hub for all activities carried ot by students including academic as well as cultural.

Library

The Central A.C. Joshi Library was established in 1947 named after the vice chancellor of the institution. However, later on, in 1963, it was shifted to Chandigarh. It is known to hold 6,400,000 publications. The library is air conditioned. It is also completely computerised.
