Panjab University (PU), a Public University and one of the oldest Universities in India was initiated at Lahore in the year 1882, has been for long pursuing a tradition of excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports. In independent India, Panjab University with its Campus at Chandigarh and nearly two hundred colleges in Punjab state and Chandigarh U.T., has served various societal needs with distinction.

The University has been recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as the “University with potential for excellence in Biomedical Sciences”. PU has also been accredited by NAAC with an A Grade. The University offers a number of courses at the Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and Doctorate (Ph. D.) levels in several of the disciplines like arts, science, law, management and many others.

Panjab University UG Admission

Panjab University offers courses in various disciplines like commerce, management, computer applications and many others at the Under Graduate level. The degrees offered by PU along with their detailed information have been given below.

Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA)

Eligibility Criteria

A person who has passed +2 examination in any discipline with at least 50% marks and passed Mathematics as one of the subject at Matriculation examination level shall be eligible to join the first semester class of B.C.A. Course, or

Any other examination recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent to 10+2.

Duration:

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Admission to the BBA degree course shall be open to candidates who have passed one of the following examinations conducted by a recognized Board/Council/University:
  • 10+2 examination securing at least 50% marks in aggregate, or
  • Any other examination recognized by the University as equivalent to 10+2 with the required minimum percentage of marks.

Duration: 3 Years

B. A./ B. Sc./ B. Sc. (Bio. Info.)

Eligibility Criteria

  • A person who has passed one of the following examinations with pass in English as one of the subjects shall be eligible to join the First Semester class of B.A. or B.Sc. (General/B.Sc. (Bio-Info.) and Honours) degree course in a College affiliated to this University, however, a person who has not qualified English as one of the subjects at the +2 examinations, shall be eligible to join B.A./B.Sc.-Ist Semester provisionally subject to his/her qualifying the deficient subject of English from the parent Board/Body/Council/ University in two consecutive chances subsequent to his/her admission, failing which his/her admission to B.A./B.Sc. Ist Semester and the result for the examination shall automatically stand cancelled.
  • B.A./B.Sc./B.Com Part-I (Old Scheme)/Pre-Medical/Pre–Engg.)/ Intermediate/Arts/Science/Agriculture examination of Panjab University.
  • the +2 examination under 10+2+3 system of education of a recognized University/Board/Council.
  • Prak Shastri/Vishard examination with compulsory English. (Vide Senate Para-LXXVII dated 06.12.2009)
  • any other examination recognized by the University as equivalent to (i), (ii) and (iii) above.

Provided that:

  • A person joining the B.Sc. course must have obtained at least 40 percent marks in the aggregate of the qualifying examination;
  • A B.Sc. student must have out of the three elective subjects offered by him/her (excepting Anthropology) passed at least 2 Science subjects in the qualifying examination. He/she may offer the third elective subject from the Faculty of Science or Faculty of Arts.

B.A./ B. Sc./ B. Com./ B.C.A./ B.B.A. Course

Eligibility Criteria

  • A candidate joining the B.A. First Semester should have obtained at least 33% marks in aggregate of all subjects (including the marks obtained by him in the subject of compartment, Theory & Practical/s taken together) taken up by him at the +2 examination.
  • A candidate joining the B.Sc. First Semester should have obtained at least 40% marks in aggregate of all subjects (including the marks obtained by him in the subject of compartment, Theory & Practical/s taken together) taken up by him at the +2 examination.

Duration: 3 Years

Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Admission to the B. Com. Degree course shall be open to a person who has passed one of the following examinations conducted by a recognized Board/ Council/ University:
  • +2 examination or B. Com. -  Part-I (Old scheme) of Panjab University with three of the following subjects securing at least 45 per cent marks in the aggregate:
    • Commerce (or theory of commerce or foundation course in commerce)
    • Accountancy (or book keeping and accountancy)
    • Economics
    • Business Organization (or Business Management or Theory and Practice of Management)
    • Insurance (or General Insurance or Life Insurance)
    • Banking and Trade
    • Commercial Geography
    • Office Management and Secretarial Practice (or Office Organization and Management)
    • Mercantile Law (or any Company Law)
    • Auditing
    • Typewriting and Stenography/Computers (for typewriting)
  • +2 Examination or B.A. Part-I (Old Scheme) of Panjab University with at least two of the subjects mentioned in (a) securing at least 50% marks in aggregate;
  • +2 Examination or B.A. Part-I/B.Sc.-I/Pre-Engineering/Pre-Medical Examination of the Panjab University under the Old Scheme not covered in (b) securing at least 50% marks.
  • Any other examination recognized by the University as equivalent to (a) or (b) or (c) as given above with requisite percentage of marks given under each clause.

B. Sc. Agriculture

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates desirous of admission to the course should have passed their XII examination from a recognized Board, with:

  • Physics, Chemistry, Maths/ Computers or (Non-Medical stream)
  • Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology/ Agriculture (Medical Stream)
  • XII in Agriculture stream

B. F. A. 4 Years

Candidate who has passed one of the following examinations shall be eligible to join the course.

i.            10+2 examination of the Board of School Education of Panjab or Haryana or Himachal Pradesh, Central Board of School Education, Delhi (for the Union Territory of Chandigarh only) with at least 40% marks in the aggregate.

ii.            Any other examination recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent to (i) above with at least 40% marks in subjects.

In addition to the conditions laid down in 2.1 (a) a candidate must pass such test or tests, written and practical and/ or oral as may be prescribed by the Principal.

Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)

Eligibility Criteria

A person who possesses one of the following qualifications shall be eligible to join the course:

  • Candidates with at least fifty percent marks either in the Bachelor’s degree and/or in the Master’s degree in Sciences/Social Sciences/Humanity, Bachelor’s in Engineering or Technology with specialization in Science and Mathematics with 55% marks or any other qualification equivalent thereto, are eligible for admission to the programme. (Syndicate para 52 R (XIV) meeting held on 25-01-2015).
  • The reservation and relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD and other categories shall be as per the rules of the Central Government/State Government, whichever is applicable.

Duration: 2 Years

Bachelor of Education in Yoga (B. Ed.)

Eligibility Criteria

  • A person who has passed from Panjab University or from any other recognized University whose examination has been recognized as equivalent to the corresponding examination (under 10+2+3 system of education) of this University shall be eligible to join this course.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in any Faculty with at least 50 percent marks in the aggregate and reservation shall be provided as per the Rules and Regulation of the University/Chandigarh Administration, Chandigarh.

Duration: 2 Years

Bachelor of Physical Education (B. P. Ed.)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 50% marks and having at least participation in the Inter-College/Inter-Zonal/District/School competition in sports and games as recognized by the AIU/IOA/SGFI/Govt. of India, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with 45% marks, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 45% marks and studied Physical Education as compulsory/ elective subject, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with 45% marks and having participated in National/ Inter University/ State competitions or secured 1st , 2nd or 3rd position in Inter College/ Inter-Zonal/ District/ School competition in sports and games as recognized by the AIU/ IOA/ SGFI/ Govt. of India, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with participation in International competitions or secured 1st , 2nd or 3rd position in National/ Inter-University competition in sports and games as recognized by respective federations/ AIU/ IOA/ SGFI/ Govt. of India, OR
  • Graduation with 45% marks and at least three years of teaching experience (for deputed in-service candidates i.e. trained physical education teachers/ coaches).

Duration: 3 Years

Panjab University PG Admission

Master in Education (M. Ed.)

  • A person who possesses the following qualifications shall be eligible to join the course:
  • A degree in Bachelor of Education/ equivalent degree of this university with 50% marks (45% in case of SC/ ST/ BC candidates) or from any other University/ Institution recognized by AIU, OR
  • B. A. B. Ed,/ B. Sc. B. Ed. (50%), OR
  • B. El. Ed. (50%), OR
  • D. El. Ed. with an undergraduate degree (with 50% marks in each.)
  • Reservation and relaxation for SC/ ST/ OBC/ PWD and other applicable categories shall be as per the rules of the Central/ Government/ State Government, whichever is applicable.
  • Any other qualifications recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent to (a).
  • Qualify Entrance Test for M.Ed. with at least 20% marks (15% in case of SC/ ST/ BC and blind candidates).

Master in Physical Education (M. P. Ed.)

  • A person who possesses one of the following qualifications shall be eligible to join the course:
  • Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) or equivalent with at least 50% marks, OR
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Health and Physical Education with at least 50% marks.

M. A./ M. Sc.

The admission will be made strictly in order of merit. For admission to M.A.-Ist semester in case the College/Departments decide to hold Entrance Tests at their level, the following procedure will be followed besides the rules/Regulations of Panjab University governing eligibility, in a particular subject.

M. Sc. (IT)

  • A person who has passed one of the following examinations shall be eligible to join Part-I (First Semester) of the course:
  • Graduate (B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./B.C.A. under 10+2+3 system of examination) having Mathematics as main subject up to 10+2 level, OR
  • B.E./B.Tech. in Computer Science from the Panjab University, OR
  • Any other examination of another University recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent to (i) or (ii) above.

Microbial Technology

  • A candidate must have Bachelor’s degree from any field of Biological Sciences including Biotechnology is eligible to seek admission in M. Sc. Microbial Biotechnology.
  • The admission will be based on Entrance Test (CET-PG) conducted by the Panjab University. The question paper should comprise of at least 50% from subject of basic Microbiology and rest from other fields of biological sciences and Biotechnology.

P. G. D. C. A.

  • Bachelor’s degree of Panjab University under 10+2+3 system of examination with at least 50% marks, in any discipline, OR
  • B. E. / B. Tech, OR
  • Any other examination recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent to (i) or (ii) above.

Panjab University Admission Process

GENERAL CONDITIONS REGARDING ELIGIBILITY:

The qualifying examination of a candidate on the basis of which he/she is seeking admission to the next higher class in the College should be recognized by the Panjab University.

Only eligible candidates will be admitted to the course concerned.

All Foreign Students shall obtain Eligibility Certificate from the Deputy Registrar (General), Panjab University in all cases and the admission of the foreign students to College/ Teaching Departments would be governed by the Guidelines issued by the Dean of Foreign Students.

Reservation of Seats:

  • 55.5% of the seats in each course shall be allocated to candidates belonging to the General Category.
  • 44.5% seats shall be allocated to candidates belonging to the Reserved Category, as per details given below:
    • 15% for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes.
    • 7.5% for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes.
    • 5% for candidates belonging to the Backward Classes
    • 3% seats will be horizontally reserved for Persons or class of Persons with Disability (PwD)

Available College Facilities

Panjab University has many landmark structures such as the Gandhi Bhawan, Student Centre, Student council and the fine arts museum. It boasts of a huge air conditioned computerised library with around 6,40,000 publications. There are 17 hostels and many buildings are designed by the celebrated architect Pierre Jeanneret. The student centre holds many student councils that is the hub for all activities carried ot by students including academic as well as cultural.

Library

The Central A.C. Joshi Library was established in 1947 named after the vice chancellor of the institution. However, later on, in 1963, it was shifted to Chandigarh. It is known to hold 6,400,000 publications. The library is air conditioned. It is also completely computerised.
