More about Punjabi University, Patiala

The Punjabi University Patiala, a Public University in the north of India, was established on 30 April 1962 under the Punjabi University Act 1961. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), and an autonomous institution of the UGC in the year 2016 awarded ‘A’ Grade to the University. The University offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management, Computer Science, and Arts. Admission to all programs is strictly based on merit only.

The University has a modern well-planned campus situated on Patiala-Chandigarh road at a short distance from the main city. University is spread over 600 acres of land, have 1500+ teachers with nearly 14,000+ students. It has 278 Colleges affiliated to it.

The Punjabi University provides scholarship benefits. Merit Scholarships awarded is based on the result of an examination conducted by the Punjabi University.

The Directorate of Sports promotes sports in the University and its affiliated colleges. It regularly organizes inter-college competitions in various games and provides training to students to participate in inter-university, National, International games. Facilities for games such as hockey, football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, athletics etc. is provided. The Punjabi University also has a large gymnasium and a hall for indoor games.

The Youth Welfare Department of the University organizes youth activities all around the year. The Punjabi University has won unique distinctions in Youth Festivals organized by the Association of Indian Universities in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt. of India; Directorate of Youth Services, Panjab; Directorate of Higher Education, Panjab and Panjabi Academy of Delhi State. The Admission to the various courses is done online. Candidates seeking admission in various courses are required to fill the online Application. No document is to be attached with online application form. 

The general eligibility for a  graduate student in related discipline will be 50% (SC/ST 45%) marks for admission to the Post-graduate courses in the University. For admission to the M.Sc. courses in various science faculties, only those students will be eligible for admission who have studied science subjects for three years at the graduate level. Candidates belonging to the following categories are allowed relaxation of 5% in the aggregate percentage. a) Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe b) Physically handicapped if they produce a medical certificate that they have at least 40% physical disability.

The Punjabi University follows the reservation Policy implemented by Punjab Government which is as follows:

1. 85% seats would be reserved for the candidates from within the State of Punjab. The eligibility criteria for 85% seats will be that the candidate must be a resident of Punjab State in terms of Punjab Government.

2. 15% seats will be open to all the candidates from outside the state of Punjab.

3.  Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes – 25%

4.  Backward Classes/OBC – 5%

5.  Sports seats – 2%

The facilities provided to the students are:

1. Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Library – It is the University Library which is a hub of academic and research activities. It has a total of 4,80,759 books; 52,995 bound periodicals; subscribes to 356 current journals and 22 newspapers.

2. Dr. Ganda Singh Punjabi Reference Library - is an integral and precious part of the library, which is interlinked with the main building. The library has 97,828 books on Punjabi language, Literature, Punjab History, Punjabi Culture and Sikh religion.

3. Computer Centre - provides a central facility to cater the needs of students, research scholars, faculty and the various wings of the University administration.

5. Sadbhavna Club - The major objective of the club is to promote the spirit of National Integration among the students. The activities of the club include organizing Seminar, Interstate Youth Exchange Programmes, Personality Development Programmes, etc.

Hostel

There are three residential hostels for boys and four residential hostels for girls. The hostel's house 4000 students. A common mess is attached to the hostel. 

Laboratory

The University provides with a Computer lab facility with free Wi-Fi for students and teachers. 

Sports

Students are encouraged to take an active part in sports. Facilities for games such as hockey, football, cricket etc. and well as indoor games are provided. The University has a large gym and a hall for indoor games.

Extra - Curricular

1. Centre for Development Economics and Innovation Studies (CDEIS) -  It has been established with financial support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of India at Punjabi University, Patiala in April 2012. The Centre is engaged in conducting Conferences, workshops and training programmes.

2. Women's Studies Centre (WSC) - The Women's Studies Centre, Punjabi University,  collaborated with the Department of Theater and Television, Centre for Advanced Media Studies and Department of youth welfare has developed audiovisual content to highlight the issues of education, health, and nutrition of girl child. 

3. Centre for Advanced Media Studies (CAMS) - It has been established so that students get a clear version of the media industry. They also offer media courses in Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree. 

4. Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) - The center was established as Audio Visual Research Centre (AVRC) in 1989 by the UGC-CEC at Punjabi University, under the Country-Wide Classroom (CWC) Project. Promoting and experimenting with new technology was the main new key area. 

5. Centre for Census Studies and Research (CCSR) -The center is made to keep a check on social-economic-demographic conditions of India's Population.

 

Library

Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha is the Central Library which is a hub of academic and research activities. It stocks more than 415,000 books and has hundreds of journals. The library is kept open for 360 days. The library has a reading hall, which has a capacity for 400 readers.
