More about Sikkim Manipal University

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) was formed in 1995 as result of the agreement signed between the Manipal Pai Foundation and the Government of Sikkim. Earlier, it was known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences. Incorporated through Act No.9/1995 of the Sikkim Government, the university is recognized by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India. It is based on Public Private Partnership model, the first ever in India for Higher Education and Health Care services. The university was incorporated with an objective to link education to skill development, and to make the students of Sikkim educated, skilled and employable, thereby providing them with a platform to harness varied options within and outside the state.

SMU is part of the Manipal Group of Universities and has two campuses: Medical (Health Sciences) Campus and the Technology and Management Campus. The courses offered by the university are approved by the regulatory bodies like Nursing Council of India, Indian Association of Physiotherapy, Medical Council of India (MCI), the Distance Education Council, and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey has ranked the university with 5th position among Engineering Colleges of Eminence, 6th among Leading Institutes delivering Excellence in Education, 7th among top private engineering colleges, and 20th in faculty/ research and consultancy/EDP and other programs.

Sikkim Manipal University offers about 57 Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses in the streams of science, commerce, humanities, engineering, management, medicine, information science, to name a few. It has 90 research grants and 5 constituent institutes. SMU also offers open and distance education courses in the fields of Information Technology and Management Studies.

An aspiring student can apply through Online or Offline mode. Students seeking admission at the Under Graduate level are required to have passed their 10+2 or its equivalent from any recognized Board/ University. Candidates seeking admission in Post Graduate courses are required to have obtained their Bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline or its equivalent from any recognized Institution/ University. It will be followed by Group Discussions and Personal Interviews for certain courses as a part of the admission. Admission will be on the basis of merit obtained in qualifying examination and/ or on the basis of a valid score as prescribed by the University in the Entrance Test held by the University for the particular courses and/ or on the basis of a valid score in the relevant National Level Entrance Examinations which will vary according to the course. 

In all the courses in the technical campus of SMU, 5% relaxation of marks in the qualifying examination will be given to candidates belonging to the SC/ ST/ OBC Categories. SMU provides a scholarship to meritorious students; it offers 30% concession on Course fee on merit basis and 75% concession in tuition fees is provided to the students sponsored by Government of Sikkim.

Available College Facilities

Sikkim Manipal University was established in the year 1995. The University has two Campuses, Technical Campus and Medical Campus. The University has the ideology of “Clean and Green Sikkim”. The University ensures all the relevant facilities to the students, for a comfortable academic journey.

The University keeps a constant check on the Hygiene and Cleanliness of the Campus. The students and faculty are ensured with proper security at the Campus Premises. The Infrastructure is well-furnished. The University has a large Campus Area, where there is a provision of Sports Ground, Conference Hall, Auditorium, among others.
