More about TERI University

TERI University was established in 1998 and was then known as 'TERI School of Advanced Studies'. In 1999, it was granted the status of ‘Deemed to be University’ by the University Grants Commission and notified vide Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India. Later in 2006, the School was renamed as TERI University. The institute had been rooted with an objective of providing institution and training in Energy Studies, Environmental Studies, Public Policy, and Biosciences, amongst others. 

TERI University was formed with a need to disseminate the vast pool of knowledge created by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), its parent body, a not for profit, independent research institute of acknowledged globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the areas of energy, environment, and sustainable development. A Memorandum of Understanding has been established between the University and TERI to ascertain the collaborative research and programs, mutual support for seminars, conferences, seminars and joint studies.

TERI University offers Post Graduate, Doctorate, Certificate and Research programs in various fields and subjects like Geo-informatics, Economics, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Studies and Resource Management, Climate Science & Policy, Urban Development Management and Water Resource Management, Renewable Energy Engineering and Management etc. TERI University is one of the ten institutions chosen worldwide by the MacArthur Foundation to run the following program: M.A. Program in Public Policy & Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Practice.

Admission to the PhD Programs is done on the basis of a test/interview conducted by the concerned department. Students seeking admission can apply at any time throughout the year. TERI University also offers PhD scholarships and few assistantships through TERI’s research projects to the meritorious students, done on a competitive basis. Admission to all the PhD courses is subject to availability of vacancies in the relevant specializations. Minimum qualification required for admission is:

(1) M.Sc/MA/M Phil in a relevant field or equivalent

(2) Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent

Students with a B Tech degree in the relevant field or equivalent need to have a minimum CGPA of 7.5 on a 10 point scale or 70% marks.

Application to different courses can be done online or offline. Online payment through credit card/direct bank debit, requires a requisite payment of Rs 1250. Alternatively, students can also get the application forms and the information brochure from Registrar, TERI University, Vasant Kunj campus or through post by sending a Demand Draft of Rs 1500.

Additionally, while pursuing the master's programmes, top performers get an opportunity to complete their major projects at Yale University, USA, or at Freie University of Berlin, which are entirely funded through collaborative tie-ups.

TERI University believes in giving equal importance to both academics and extra-curricular activities. Students get enough opportunities to showcase and develop their skills and talents. Some events that are very enthusiastically organized by the University include International Youth Day, Ethnic Day, Independence Day, Sports meet, to name a few. It also has a number of active cultural clubs including Dramatics Club, Elocution Club, Music and Dance Club, Eco-Club and Elocution Club.

The University provides a pool of facilities including hostel facility for outstation candidates, state-of-the art computer hardware and software, video-conferencing facilities, well-equipped laboratories, South Asia's most comprehensive library on energy and environment. The Placement Cell of the University aims to place students in appropriate organizations for their major project work as well as in jobs after the completion of their degree programs. Thus, students get a good chance to complete their project in collaboration with corporate organizations, consultancies, research, government and non-government organizations so as to get hands-on experience in their respective areas of specialization.
