More about Tezpur University

Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1994. Located in the city of Tezpur, District Sonitpur, this university is a Central University. The university campus is at Napaam about 15km east of Tezpur, the headquarters of the Sonitpur district of Assam. The Napaam campus of the university is spread on a plot area of 262 acres. The programmes offered by the University focus keenly on science, technology, and humanities.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous Institution of UGC, accredited the University with 'A' Grade and is accorded as the Visitor’s Best University Award for the year 2016 by the President of India. The University ranks 5th among India’s top 100 Universities in an assessment conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, through the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Further, the University is placed in the top 601-800 Universities in the World University Rankings 2016-2017 conducted by the Times Higher Education (THE), London.

Tezpur University consists of 4 Schools - School of Engineering, School of Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and School of Management Sciences. These Schools consists of various departments offering courses at the graduate, post graduate, and doctoral level. It offers diploma and certificate courses as well for some particular subjects. The various fields of study at Tezpur university are as follows : Physics, Nanoscience, Chemistry, Polymer Science and Technology, Chemical Sciences, Mathematics,  Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biosciences, Environmental Sciences, English, Chinese, Linguistic and Language Technology, Linguistic and Endangered Languages, Cultural Studies, Mass Communication and Journalism, Sociology, Hindi, Social Work, Business Administration, Tourism Management, Commerce, Computer Science Engineering, Food Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication and Renewable Energy. The University offers Add-on courses on Yoga and Violin too.

For graduate courses, the candidates can apply on the basis of their marks in the respective stream at High School level. For post graduate courses, candidates need to have 45% marks in their graduation in the respective subjects and they will have to appear for the entrance test for the particular course. For admission to Ph.D. courses, candidates can apply twice a year. Admission process for Ph.D. courses takes place in June and December. The University follows the guidelines mandated by the Government of India for the reservation of seats in various courses at the graduate, post graduate, and doctoral level.

The University has a number of laboratories, computing facilities, internet connectivity, a dedicated power supply system with DG backup and a rich library having connectivity to several digital libraries. While students’ accommodation is provided in 14 well-designed hostels, a sufficient number of residential quarters is available for the accommodation of teaching and non-teaching staff. Other basic amenities like central water supply, campus security, guest house, canteen, gymnasium, outdoor and indoor sports facilities, post office, banks with ATMs, schools etc., are also available to cater to the needs of the University community.

Being a Central University, it is privileged to receive funds from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India, through the University Grants Commission. Faculty members of different academic Departments have been able to receive a large number of research grants amounting to crores of rupees from different funding agencies/organizations.

The graduated students of the University have already created a niche in various leading MNCs, PSUs and government departments through their high professionalism and intellectual ability coupled with honesty and commitment. National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC), a Government of India Undertaking under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, provides financial assistance at concessional rates to meritorious students of Backward Classes who have got admission on merit under non-payment seats in the colleges/Institutes. The educational loan will cover admission fee, annual fee, hostel charges, stationery, study material, laptop, computer, insurance, etc.

Library

The University has a Central Library with a rapidly increasing collection of books, periodicals, journals and e-resources in all areas of Engineering, Sciences, Management, Social Science, and Humanities. It is fully computerized with the LibSys software, which is an integrated multi-user library management system that supports all its in-house operations and modernized with a barcoding based automation system that facilitates check-in, check-out, and renewal of books. It has CCTV surveillance system for the safety of the library materials. The Central Library is providing access to e-resources and databases through the e-ShodhSindhu Consortia of INFLIBNET Centre and DeLCoN Consortium.

The library at present holds one lakh documents besides more than 2155 CDs pertaining to different academic discourses. The library has added 10078 books in the 2015-16 financial year. The library has 77286+ books.Apart from the above resources, the Central Library also contains more than 1000 publications in TU Knowledge Repository and more than 300 Thesis in ETD Repository. The opening hour of the library is from 9 am – 12 midnight on all working days and 10 am - 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
