More about University of Madras

The University of Madras is a public state university in Chennai (formerly Madras), Tamil Nadu. Established in 1857, it is one of the oldest universities in India. The university was incorporated by an act of the Legislative Council of India. The teaching-cum-affiliating university was established as per the model of London University.


National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) have accredited the University with an “A” grade. It is also one among the first five universities in the country to receive recognition from the University Grants Commission as a ‘University with Potential for Excellence’. Internationally, the university has been ranked 89 in the “QS University Rankings BRICS” University Rankings of 2016.  In India, the “National Institutional Ranking Framework” ranked it 64 overall and 41 among universities in 2017.


The University of Madras has 17 schools and 87 departments of post-graduate teaching and research, together with 111 affiliated colleges, 3 OT approved institutions, 5 approved institutions (for Diploma/Certificate courses), 15 stand-alone institutions offering MBA/MCA courses, and 52 approved research institutions. The university offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate Courses in various specialisation, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes. Various Under Graduate and Post Graduate programmes are also being offered through the Institute of Distance Education, known as IDE of Madras University.


The University has signed a number of Memorandum of Understandings with 155 foreign and 27 Indian Universities and with 21 Industry organizations. Nearly 95 sponsored research projects are funded by various agencies and are being carried out in the University departments. The UGC – Human Resource Development Centre of the University regularly organizes Orientation programmes for College and University faculty members.

The university provides Fee concession to the SC/ST/SCA candidates for self-supportive courses. The students are provided 50 percent fee concession on tuition fee, laboratory fee and special laboratory fee. Differently Abled Students are provided with Full fee concession including examination fee (except student’s safety insurance) in P.G. and M.Phil. Programmes. Additionally, BC/MBC and National Merit scholarships are available to the students under the University Departments.


The University has started with a scheme named as ‘Earn While you Learn’ for Post-graduate students and Research Scholars of the University. Under this, deserving students can work as part-time laboratory assistants, library assistants, technical assistants, and tutorial assistants in the University for a specified number of hours every month. They will receive a suitable monthly remuneration.

Laboratory

The Language Labs at the university gives importance to computer-aided multi-media instruction and language acquisition. The lab provides for learning, practicing and producing language skills through interactive lessons and communicative mode of teaching.

Sports

The University has established the Madras University Union at Rutland House, Spur Tank Road, Chetpet, Chennai, in 1932 to promote sports. Students are encouraged to participate in All India-University sports competitions held annually. The facilities provided are:

Extra - Curricular

The NSS Unit of the University of Madras regularly organizes camps related to health and hygiene, literacy, environment, personality development, etc for the overall development of the students. Students from the unit also volunteer in various Inter State Camps, National Integration Camps and Inter-State and National Cultural Festivals.

Library

Madras University Library was established in 1907 in the Connemara Public Library. The Guindy Campus Library was established in 1900. It is housed in the Science Campus of University of Madras comprising of the Schools of Physical, Chemical, Life, Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences. 

The primary mission of this library is to support the educational and research programs of the University by providing physical and intellectual access to information, in line with the present and anticipated educational and research functions of the University. Madras University Library was established in 1907 in the Connemara Public Library.
